    Damn, that is a hippiemobile. Those are 2 great rides to have in a milder CA climate.

    @Red Alert

    The 1971, which is exempt from smog testing due to its year, and which I've actually had the honor of driving (see second picture)...

    And the '77 Westfalia that won't pass smog and is presently registered in Texas; I've ridden in the Westy a few times, but I've only actually driven the dark green '71...

    IIRC and under the BAR 90 program I could inspect, test and smog any vehicle even if it was a 49 state only compliance as long as it had 7500 or more miles on the odometer. I think there was one other requirement but I forget what is was, this was 30+ years ago. Each dealer was allocated only so many Quattros and Testarossa's, there was a scramble to get them into CA as the markup was almost double.

    Here is the truck in question; 1994 Toyota pickup with roughly 126K miles if I remember correctly; I'm probably one of the only people in the world who will zero in on a 1990s Toyota pickup amongst a sea of musclecars and hot rods, and promptly go nuts...

    The first vehicles to use R134a were 1993 models, including the newly redesigned Chevy Camaro and Pontiac Firebird, the all-new Jeep Grand Cherokee, the entire Volvo lineup, the entire Nissan lineup, and most German manufacturers (Mercedes-Benz for sure; Unsure of the others). From what I've seen from years of browsing the internet and looking under hoods, pretty much the entire Toyota lineup was still using R-12 in 1993, with the possible exception of the new-for-that-year T100. By 1994, the entire Toyota lineup had made the switch to R134a, including the venerable "pickup"; To make sure that mechanics didn't mix refrigerants and oils, which would result in severe damage to compressors and other components, manufacturers went out of their way to make sure people knew to only use R134a. Here is the A/C label for the gray truck...

    No Tacoma has ever used R-12; By the time my Tacoma rolled off the assembly line in August 2009, R-12 was all but extinct and all automotive A/C systems had been using R134a for more than 14 years. This is reflected in the design of the label under the hood of my Tacoma; It says R134a, but there is no excessive emphasis on making sure only R134a is used. On another note, the system in this gray 1994 pickup is made by Denso in Japan; The system (or at least the compressor) in my truck was made by Delphi-Harrison stateside. I will post a picture of my truck's A/C label tomorrow!

    1994 Toyota 2WD 5-speed pickup with factory A/C and pretty much no other options (Not even a passenger side mirror!)...

    1983 Toyota pickup; Apparently, this company called Custom Cab would pluck new trucks right off the assembly line and stretch them, resulting in this sweet rig!

    By his own admission, the second owner says he drove the shit out of this truck and ended up having to replace the engine as a result; The engine is out of 1982 pickup that was totaled in a rollover if I remember correctly. This red truck originally had factory A/C, but the owner never reinstalled it when he did the engine swap...

    My friend just bought a Toyota Hilux Surf in North Carolina. RHD, turbo diesel, and I think it’s a manual. I’ll get a pic soon.
