Told ya, and you didn't believe me ;)

Either way, man, you've got a great truck. Enjoy it. I live in a border town to Mexico, so I actually see a relatively good number of Hilux's with Mexican tags.

The Head gasket problems actually were caused by using green coolant the engine block is aluminum and so is the head and the green type eats aluminum because it doesn't have corrosion inhibitors and it's not ideal for aluminum radiators and blocks/heads Toyota put a new motor in mine and put pink coolant which is not eat aluminum for breakfast/lunch & dinner. Dealership was trying to replace my heads but the block was so pitted it couldn't be resurfaced so they had to give me a new motor

Lots of folks getting crazy money for the early pickups. Detail it to the max and put it in an online auction. Then buy the Tacoma you want.

If you have the 3.0, it is 100% not a Tacoma. People replace badges and stickers all the time. You can check the assembly date, but that's not always the model year, either. I have a 2022 KTM dirtbike that I bought in August of 2021

It's also not a Hilux. Those haven't been sold here since the 70's. In the States, we got simply the "Pickup" until the Tacoma came out in late 1995. The Hilux and Pickup started out the same, but diverged the longer they were imported to the U.S. For example, the Hilux had a solid front axle until 1997, whereas the American Pickup got IFS in 1986.

    That is simply false.

The recall was for the design of the head gasket. There is no mention in of the coolant type in the recall/TSB notices.

His 3.0 blew a gasket somewhere remote and he's been living off the land ever since

Couldn't agree with you more. The 22RE is slow, not much more fuel efficient, and still prone to head gasket failures. You won't ever hear the purists admit to those things though. One of the major perks of the 22RE is it's simplicity. When something goes wrong it's much easier to work on than the 3VZE. There are modifications that help reduce the risk of head gasket failure on the 3VZE. Crossover delete, headers, and some newer style head gaskets help curb it's head gasket blowing nature. Maybe this will help somebody else because clearly the OP checked out not long after posting in 2011.
