Alright, I know there are a few of you guys on here. Can anyone help me track down some more information on the 318th Infantry from WW1? Trying to figure out at what point someone was promoted or discharged, anything honestly. I've found a few good websites with photos, I've also found the history book for the 318th. If any of you fine Gents would be willing to help, please let me know.

It's been productive and dare I say, euphoric 24 hours.

I’d be limited to open sources and would probably find the same stuff you already have.

I’m going to quote you in the one military thread I follow , some there might be useful.

Carey you are phenomenal!!! Thank you for helping!!! It’s actually (potentially) my Great Grandfather. I follow Gibbs beliefs, and don’t believe in coincidences. My heart really thinks the head stone and info I’ve found that it’s him.

I originally based on a really small thumb nail thought the second flag was potentially USMC, found a better photo… to me (Sorry guys) it means even more being the only known firefighter in my family…

are you a relative? Can try to find some out of archives for specific branch. But typically they wont release specific info unless you are related. Theres some 318th pics down on this site.

should just edit. But I had to go check. So I have a few of that link and pages there saved. But nothing definite. I actually sat here and watched the posted black and white film they’ve got. He (Ggd) is listed as sailing to France under the Privates. But tomb has him as Corp I believe (don’t have it in-front of me)

Best of luck finding the info you seek. I’ll be at my VFW Thursday, and will see if anyone there has any other ideas.

    Here are another few options:

Check out the U.S. Army Center for Military History: https://history.army.mil/inquiries/index.html I linked the inquiries page. There is a slim possibility that he is mentioned in the unit daily morning reports...but that is a slim chance. There are also resources linked at the bottom of the page that might be helpful.

WWI records are much harder to find for many units than those that were maintained during WWII, unfortunately.

The best possibility - the place where you will have the best chance of finding info on an individual - is through the National Archives. Personnel files that contain info related to service - enlistment, awards, dates/units of service, discharge, etc. are consolidated by the individual services and, at some point, transferred to the National Archives. Unfortunately, back in the mid-70s there was a fire at the location where the records were stored...which were all paper then - and many were lost. Still it's worth a shot. Here's the link to requesting records - you can request the info whether you are sure he's your great grandfather, or not, since the info becomes public record after 62 years. Once you are able to confirm he is your grandfather you might also be able to swing getting free replacement medals that he earned through NARA, too.

    National Archives Link: https://www.archives.gov/veterans/military-service-records

Another source would be to make a trip to the Army Heritage Center in Carlisle - right alongside I81. AHEC was formed to focus on the individual soldier, as opposed to the more common unit centered view. You used to be able to visit and research their holdings. It is an awesome place to visit, irrespective, but you could always reach out by email/phone to get some idea of whether it would be worthwhile. If I remember correctly, they do have a pretty expansive WWI bibliography. https://www.armyheritage.org/

Good luck!! I'll put on my thinking cap to come up with any other potential options.

@TinyTech626 For what it's worth, I found my Grandfather's DD214 @ our county courthouse. His original papers were burned in the fire @Devious6 referenced. Many returning servicemen filed their papers @ the courthouse where they resided. Might be worth a shot?
