    As title describes,

I have been around this issue on and off with my truck.

It is stupid that our gas tank caps are not lockable.

I have tried around 5 gas tanks in about 2 years of ownership and none works.. tried from cheap to expensive caps from auto parts. NONe worked.

Then I read many threads here and one member assured that a model (which I do not remember now) from STANT had worked for him.

fast forward, I bought it and have been having same issue. If clear code and original, all good, if not, trouble code come back eventually.

I must have a lockable gas cap. My truck is always outside (no garage)

Anyone had luck with certain gas cap brand and model? Thanks!

After reading quite a bit on this I've concluded that the only cap that works 100% of the time is the non-locking OEM cap. FWIW, my truck and all my vehicles before it for the past 9 years since we bought this house have been outside 100% of the time. My wife's Prius and my Honda Goldwing get the garage. In all that time I've never had an issue that made me wish I had a locking gas cap. You can't get a hose into the neck to siphon gas out anyway, so unless you have a lot of enemies that would dump shit into your gas tank, you may not necessarily have as much of a need for one either. Just something to consider.

Maybe there’s a chance @MESO might be able to make one for us based on the OEM cap?

Or another solution like a lockable piece of plastic or sheet metal that is recessed in behind the OEM door? I realize this won’t stop someone from attempting to bash it in but it may buy a few minutes or deter them from trying.

I think OP is more worried about assholes that would pour sugar, flour, or even dirt into the tank over someone stealing gas. Modern cars have a mechanism that you can’t siphon gas anymore.

So you have loads of vandals after you? I say that because as @FL_TRD Sport says.......

Yep. Stuff tastes nasty. Even with Ethanol. :D

I've used a Stant re-packaged by Toyota Canada (still with Stant's logo on it) and sold at dealers under P/N C0170-00020 for 8 years without issue in my 2nd gen. I've also used a Stant P/N 10504 bought from Rock Auto for 3 years without issue in my current truck. Is this the P/N you used? Make sure you tighten the cap until it clicks 3 times as per the instructions.

Sounds like you haven't had much run time on the OEM cap. It's possible there might be a small leak elsewhere like the filler neck or one of the evap hoses. Take it to a shop to get diagnosed. Simple enough with the right tools to put a vacuum on the system and see where the leak is.

Did you get the fuel pump recall done yet?

I bought a Stant 10504 cap off ebay a few weeks ago when the sugar in tank thread came around. anyhow it was one that someone had said they had success with on 2nd and 3rd gen tacos. I put that thing on and was okay for 2 days then got the check gas cap warning on the way to work. I pulled over opened it and it made a sucking sound. Then I put it back on turned till i heard a few clicks. No issue till Friday when I got a Check engine light. plugged in my BT OBDII dongle and ran OBD fusion, came up with several evap codes for small and large leak. I rechecked the cap cleared the codes and went for a drive CEL came back. Put stock cap back on, cleared codes and no problem since.

Going on 3rd year with the 10504 Stant cap. It’s the same one Toyota offers at the dealers. Never had a problem. How many clicks do you tighten it? I always do like 6 or so.

Every time around halloween our town road being off the beaten path gets hit with these assholes doing that chit, plus blowing up mailbox's. I had a locking gas door on the tundra that didn't get touched, but a couple neighbors on the road did, and boy were their cars screwed up. When i got the tacoma i had a locking gas cap installed. So far after nearly 2 years all has been fine. From what i can make out the dealer used a stant one.

3 clicks here. I believe the OEM non locking one they say only one click.
I maybe should try it again. With more clicks.

May be worth a try, 2-3 clicks felt like it left it a little loose the next time I removed it. If I recall, the original cap has some mechanism that only allowed one click. Almost like it had some sort of lock that stopped people from even attempting to over-tighten it. I think it used two plastic studs that would “bottom out” instead of the threads on the Stant locking cap. Make sure the filler neck that the cap seats on is good and clean. Every year I’ll usually put a VERY SMALL amount of silicone grease on it to help preserve the caps gasket, as well as hopefully stopping corrosion to the sealing surface like my last Toyota suffered from. It would chew up a cap every year due to the rust on it, lol

I am giving it another go, put the locking cap back on this morning before I drove to work. 6 clicks this time! No codes or check gas cap message so far but last time it took two days to show last time so the experiment will continue. will share the results in a few days time.
