This is the route I went as well. And if you send a few pics of your existing key they send you a pre-cut key and all you'll have to do is program it. Easy process!

Yes, they were very fast at sending out my order and same with refunding the security deposit on the programer once returned. I didn't do the key by photo thing, it's a bit more costly than getting it cut locally but would be more convenient.

On a USED vehicle you get what you get. It doesn’t matter how new the used vehicle is. It’s up to the buyer to negotiate a second key if one was not offered. I would pressure the dealership for a second key. There’s a great chance the previous owner has the second key, but I don’t think you’ll have any luck finding it.

I would contact a dealer and explain what transpired. And mention the original owner supposedly only had one key.
I think the VIN search should show there was only one key issued when it was sold originally if that is what happened.
Maybe they will be decent and get you another key.

Sweaty there was a short window on the 21's that a chip shortage hit purchased Tacoma's. That they came with only one key plus a straight key I think the manufacture date was between 12/20 through 2/21. I have been hit with that BS/ and still waiting. But it's now on order. OP probably needs a little luck and smoozing of Toyota, since it's a used vehicle.

So this is what I got from the dealer when I picked up the truck. One fob w/key, one normal key, and one insert key. Maybe this means I was one that didn’t get a fob yet due to chip shortages.

And also, how the hell are you supposed to start the truck if you have no fob??

Looks like you have the key that slides in two the second fob that you are supposed to have.
You have to have the fob with your truck as that is what makes the push to start system work.

You should go to a dealer and see if they can check your build date it's likely the second one was never given out for your vin yet.

This could be why someone else said it was a different part number that Toyota sent them to the dealership for. It's probably not the complete fob with the a new key like you would get if you lost yours. I'm sure it's only the electronic bit.

OP check the build date for your truck should be on the door post. That is basically what I received. But with a plane key it has a chip to start the truck, My build date was 2/21/21 as stated there was a window of shortages. Ended in March so like I said b-4 if the truck has the unlucky dates you got what you got. Check with Toyota and be kind. Mine is a H key they do not have to work with the 2nd owner on this. If worse come to worse. Have the selling dealer work at getting it for you. The dealerships here cut the trade value by 2-500 dollar's with one key. I have to believe they checked out the VIN themselves. They aren't stupid. When I purchased it I called Toyota care they acknowledged it came with 1 and 1 but neither Toyota or the dealership offered me the letter so I didn't get ass-f....d for the 500 if I traded it. For the missing key and programming.

@SweatyBiscuit is right, used vehicles are sold as is. If they only were traded in with one key then thats all you get. I used to sell multiple brands and different dealers. Many times cars only had one key and a salesman would of course say we'll get that figured out. They don't and never do, the only way you would guarantee yourself a key would have been to write it in to the paperwork in finance as yet to be delivered. Maybe your dealer is different than the 4 ive worked at but highly doubt that. Good luck either way, if they dont supply one ask for internal pricing from parts save some of the 200+% markup.

Edit: Unless this is a "CPO" then it would be required to have 2 keys.

Yeah, I get it. I assumed on a <1 year old vehicle there would be two keys. Shame on me I guess. It’s just a dickish thing to not say anything until the customer is ready to head out the door and then the sales guy (who is your “best friend” during the whole sale) kicks you in the ass on your way out the door.

I bought my '21 SR-5 in August and they gave me one key. Took some arm twisting and about three weeks to get the second key. Dealer guy attributed it to the chip shortage.

Same here. Bought my truck the 28th of August. Two fobs and a physical key. My truck hadn’t been on the lot very long either.

I'm sorry that happened to you. The next time you buy a used car or truck, make sure anything which needs to be completed post-sale (such as adding another key) is added to something called a 'Due Bill'.

My son bought a used RAV4 last year before the chip shortage and it said right in the paperwork (Walser Toyota, Minnesota) that they will only give you one key on used vehicles. Easier to repo I'd guess?

My 2020 sr5 came with the master key with the chip, plus the dealer supplied me with a regular spare key...no chip in that one. Your implying you now have 2 keys with chips?

Your 100% correct. The salesman likely knew there was only one key the whole time. If a used vehicle is going to have 2 or 3 keys they will likely all be on the keychain the salesman is using to open the car. Most dealers keep them all together. Occasionally you will find another key in the glovebox.
