    Exactly.

I totally agree that we need to be responsible about lithium mining.

But you do know how oil and natural gas is extracted right? It doesn't just bubble up in Jed Clampett's back yard and a not-insignificant portion of our national defense budget, directly and indirectly, goes towards securing it all over the world. Fossil fuels already cause a significant amount of environmental destruction, and it's not getting better.

I realize that as a truck owner I'm just as culpable, but let's not clutch our pearls too hard about future lithium mining while oil and gas extraction, spills, misuse, and disposal (and the very real human costs of wars over it) are actively destroying the environment.

If Toyota can find a way to give me the truck I want that uses a lot less fuel, I'm all for it.

Of course not. First you need to be out walkin' around shootin' at some food. Then, up through the ground come a bubblin' crude. Oil that is, black gold, Texas tea.

    Yep.

It's about one or two angry/butthurt responses away from becoming an all out aisle crossfire.

I think Toyota understands that mining lithium is similar to mining oil or any other finite natural resource. The last 1/4 of the planet's resources are going to be very expensive to find, mine, process and distribute to the world's masses, given all of the easy-to-access reserves have already been used up. Kinda like squeazing out the last 1/4 of toothpaste out of the tube. Diminishing returns on the effort need to harvest the resources will drive up costs for the end user.

Call me crazy, but I think Toyota is positioning themselves to provide a hydrogen fuel system that is only reliant on two things - electricity and water, both of which are readily abundant and available to be utilized with existing technology that could be scaled up for production tomorrow with enough funding. I personally think the "green" future won't be based enitrely on lithium provided power - rather it'll be a combination of hydrogen fuel cells, hybrid electric/biodiesel engines w/ ducted fuel injectors, modular nuclear, traditional solar systems and super capacitor driven electronics.

$0.02 of opinion from somebody obsessed w/ green tech for $$/stock portfolio reasons, not political ones lol. If you look at your portfolios, the green revolution has already happened gents.

They gonna figure out how to make a frame that won't rust out this time around?

Saw a new Frontier today. Couldn't figure out what it was at first. It was dark gray and I was facing it head on. I thought it was the future facelifted new Ford Ranger. I think the Ranger once it gets the new C channel headlights and grill will look somewhat like the new Frontier.

personally I think the lithium issue is overblown. Not that it isn’t nasty, it is, and so is cobalt. But mining lithium at least condenses it for later reuse, carbon fuels just go away for a few million years. And no, I’m not kicking the can, I agree that we do eventually need to get away from lithium. In the end we are just talking energy storage and there is a LARGE number of different communities interested in related advancements. Be it super-duper capacitors or graphine based batteries there is a lot of different tech that can provide the same end effect.

I’m all for electric cars and trucks. Not to save the planet, although being shitty to it isn’t a good way to go either, but because what true gearhead isn’t into some kickass performance vehicles. You are right too, invest now!

Agreed. The real goal is synthetics that replace naturals; of course it's a phase in and phase out process.

Yes, I totally agree with you! And then there's recycling lithium from used batteries. Like, how many Li-ion batteries are in just your house.

Toyota is ultra secretive when comes to their products, like the new Tundra...nothing was out spy wise till a few months ago...
I'd predict that the new Tacoma will get rear disk brakes, 4 banger hybrid and a turbo version. Rear suspension still leafs due to cost...so the third generation Tacoma might just be the best overall Tacoma...it's a shame that the new Tundra doesn't even have an optional v8...so much promised little delivered...

It will likely get rear coil springs and rear disc brakes since everything on the new platform so far has. Coil springs are lighter and cheaper to produce. Plus, if the Tundra doesn’t need leaf springs to handle weight, the Tacoma won’t either. It’s cheaper to keep components the same between models and to keep production costs down. That’s the whole point of the new platform. Reduce cost, increase efficiency.

Lithium mining and extraction vs oil production and refining…
Two very different animals with very different up and downstream events.

Its 100% gonna be a mini tundra. They're gonna be on the same frame platform.
