TPMS and valve cap question?

Some yay-hoo decided they needed 3 of my valve caps (2010 OR 4x4). Went to local auto parts store (dealer 30 minute drive) to get replacements. Read on the back of a package of metal ones that they should not be used with TPMS as they can seize, so I bought the cheapy plastic ones. I assume there is nothing special about the OEM ones and the plastic replacements will work. Am I correct?

 

I haven't had any issues with the plastic replacement ones on my truck.

 

And, if your heart is set on some of the decorator metal ones, just add a finger swipe of any anti-seize to the stem before installing. The outside is the one end that is standard.

 

They have chrome looking plastic ones also. Ask a local tire shop, that's where I got mine when putting on new tires.

 

Correct, plastic ones are actually the ones that they recommend. Tire shops do not recommend putting on metal ones.

 

Been doing that for a long time with no issues. Also heard of issues caused by the metal caps interfering with the RF data transmitted by the TPMS sensors. I haven't had any issues with that either. I don't use the big disco caps either, just the small hex shaped ones.
Besides if we all checked our air pressure once a month like we're supposed to, they wouln't sieze.

 

The wifes '05 4-runner came with the metal caps and the 2 rears seized. I broke one stem trying to get the cap off. Took it to the tire shop and it cost me $160 for the new aftermarket TPMS and the mechanic got the other cap off with a dremel. The mechanic replaced all the caps with a plastic cap that had an insert that fits over the actuator like a sleeve to keep any dirt from getting into the valve.

 

I never heard such a crock of sh*t in my life. Unless they are soaked in salt water the metal ones will come right off. The friendly tire stores always charges to replace all valve stems and TPMS each time we get tires. I Think that's a rip off too. That's why a tire advertised at $120. cost's us $200. on the truck!

 

Well, salt and sand is what they use on the roads up here from fall to early spring and the next time you visit your dealer ask how much they charge for a complete new TPMS valve unit. Not just talking about the rubber section, if it breaks you need to replace the whole thing.

 

Valve caps are valve caps, if its tough to get off, use pliers.

 

I have these caps that have an alien face on them that are plastic with a metal insert and they have been fine so far. (don't worry they were free) and some a-hole stole one so I have the stock one on that tire.
