Glad you figured it out... but I'd still like to see a picture of that light switch. If it doesn't have an "Off" position then it must not have an "On" position either?? When you go in for an Inspection Sticker do you have to go after dark to show that your lights work?

because there is some weird sense of accomplishment by having the option to forget to turn them on? Why in the hell would someone get pride from not using the auto headlights

Ok, I looked at the pdf. I would not have believed it otherwise, but you are correct. For whatever reason in Toyota's feeble mind, you cannot turn off your headlights with the ignition on while it is dark outside.

Might be a Canada thing, so that you cannot drive without at least some lights on

The headlights or headlight switch is the easiest vehicle system to operate. Who can't tell when it's dark?

I've have coworkers complain when I've turned the automatic setting to off. I've found that most people are less likely to pull out in front of you in the daylight when the headlights are on.

My response was always why are you not checking to see if the vehicle settings are set to your desired preferences?

They never had a problem changing the radio station, or audio settings. Things that are not required to operate a motor vehicle.

Too many idiots running around with their auto-lights accidentally in the OFF position at night, so we need more nanny tech.
Pretty sure (In Canada at least) REAR DRLs are coming.

My ‘21 does not have an OFF - just AUTO > Full On > Parking on. It’s annoying. I want the OFF switch.

being able to tell if it’s dark or not is irrelevant. It’s purposely disabling a feature that does it automatically so you can do it manually, and then taking pride in doing so, enough pride that one feels like telling others they are not using the automatic feature and doing so manually. And you are right, it is one of the easiest to operate, so it’s pretty childish to get a sense of pride from doing so manually. “Oh look, this little knob here, I don’t need to twist it but I do anyways”, Um, ok.

as for lights being on, agreed, those are called DRLs and they exist because they work well. I believe that even your 2012, and all Tacomas newer then that, have them standard. They are already on.

why are you not ensuring your vehicle settings are where you want them? They are, that’s the point of automatic. Why not do that by hand instead of doing it automatically? Why? It does it automatically, doing it manually is just extra steps to accomplish the same thing. Taking longer to get to the same goal is just being inefficient.

I don't believe they are concerned all that much about safety. For many many years safety people have been saying to turn your headlights on when using the wipers in the rain. Why don't the headlights come on with the wipers... with no user intervention required?

Full low beam headlights and marker lights on are more visible than DRLs. DRLs are common place and can blend in with the rest of traffic equipped with DRLs. Much like vehicles that are not equipped with DRLs in the time before DRLs.

I wouldn't say that turning your low beams on during a clear day is necessary.

Vehicles can be configured to activate the headlights when when the wipers are activated. Probably something that has to be included to a fleet order, if that's an option.

My 2018 Toyota Camry had its headlights automatically come on when I turned the wipers on. Toyota utilizes this function on some vehicles, and not others. I've already complained on TW that my Tacoma with a $16k higher price tag than the Camry doesn't have that feature. Annoying af to me

    I must be simple.......cuz I don't understand the problem.

Just turn the headlights on. Leave them on.

The headlights allow other drivers better visibility to see you. Really no disadvantage to leave them on.

Shoot, my old 1981 motorcycle does not have a headlight off button. Only a switch for Low or High beam. Why? For better visibility of being seen.

Rear DRLs are already on every vehicle. Also Known As.....Running lights or marker lights.

running things like lights, for a short period before starting, can actually improve cold weather starting. The headlights themselves will not take sufficient power to reduce starting power however running them a bit before starting does help heat the battery and it can push more current
