you mean those low beams that are designed to NOT put light above the cutoff are more visible then dedicated daytime running lights? Yeah, back that one up with something.

actually rear lights are NOT on a surprising number of vehicles. It’s actually quite annoying, near weekly I see vehicles without their “lights” on that have headlights and dash lights powered yet so NOT have any rearward lights powered. It seems to be poor DRL implementations where the lights are there to act as a DRL but the lights are not “on” so the rear markers are not.

I won’t get into the lady running 75mph at night with just her Nissan DRL strips because they put out JUST enough light to look like bad headlights.

Yes....Sno.....the Running lights will only come on when the Headlights or Parking lights are turned on.

Been like this for many many many years.

If the headlights are on and the running lights are not on, then the vehicle has an electrical problem. Likely burned our filaments in the bulbs.

Yes, but if you think DRLs which are low intensity high beams are more visible in day light. You can still turn on the marker lights in addition to the DRLs. Unless the marker lights being on dim the DRLs.

Depending on the position of the sun, or time of day. Lowbeams and DRLs are going to very in which provides the most visibility.

that wouldn’t be a “daytime running light” on the rear then would it…

Yes, because of how the optics work. Low beams are specifically designed to NOT put much light above the cutoff, which means there isn’t much light striking other drivers. Daytime running lights, be it dedicated or low voltage high beams, ARE designed to put light in the direction of other drivers eyes. A low power flashlight pointed in your eyes is going to appear brighter then a high power one pointed away from you. And no, sun or no sun won’t vary how much light a DRL vs headlight direct onto another driver.

can I make it post on TW for you? Because I think it would understand better then you do. But hey, it’s not like you said all cars have rear DRLs or anything. To which I pointed out they didn’t, and then you started this whole f-ing trail down dip-flip lane.

Never mind, let me talk to the dog, he probably understands better

Running lights are all the amber lights on a tractor trailer truck… also referred as marker lights or parking lights. The top lights along the top of the cab and rear of the trailer are the clearance lights.

Daytime running lights, not running lights are on by default when either you start the car, or release the e-brake. Legally required here in Canada since sometime in the 1990s. Back then I believe most cars were using the high beam at a lower voltage. Now newer vehicles such as the Tacoma are using dedicated LEDs for this purpose.

I believe in Canada we’ll be getting some new regulations for new cars requiring that the rear lights need to be illuminated as part is the DRL function. I think this is because many cars have digital instrument clusters now and they’re lit up as soon as the vehicle is started. When dummy fires up his/her car in the dark the assumption is there that the headlights are on because the dash is all lit up. I’ve fallen into this category once or twice with my wife’s CR-V. It’s so common now, I see at least one or two per day just on my 20 minute drive to or from work.

After driving a truck into WA state for the past couple years I’ve noticed that down there not a lot of cars have DRLs, nor do they like to turn on their headlights in shitty weather. It makes it hard to judge how far away, and how fast a car is approaching when your trying to turn onto a 55mph highway.

Edit: Pic from Google, not my truck. Lol
