I worked on the cat shelter a bit today. I cut some half lap joints for the roof lid.
    This is a test cut.
    20211030_161930.jpg
Glued and screwed the frame together.
    20211030_165117.jpg
And here it is a framed in and ready for plywood.

It's always nice spending time in the shop.

Is that a carpet pad under the wood? I used a towel the other day and was wondering what would be better. I thought maybe those non slip things that go under rugs...

It’s a router mat I bought from Kencraft. They work great.

I posted some of this elsewhere but forgot there was a woodworking thread, so I'm going to post it here. We put full height book cases in our living room, however my fiancé is short and cannot reach the higher shelves.

She found pictures of a circular staircase step stool and wanted one of those. At around $3000 we figured we'd try building it ourselves. I have saws (table, jig, circular, etc.), sanders (orbital, spindle, belt), drill press and other tools so we thought why not?

She mentioned it to a couple at church and it turns out he has some pretty nice equipment, is retired and enjoys wood working. Would we like to build it in his shop? Hell yes!

We were introduced to a local store that sells awesome wood where we picked up some walnut for the treads. This is my new favorite place and it's dangerous (financially)!

She uses this step ladder to get to the top, however it is not very attractive.

    1.jpg

    The inspiration for our build.

    2.jpg

I cut out the treads table saw, then band saw (for the outside curve of the stair), jig saw for the inside curve on the stair, then drilled the holes. Clamped them together and started sanding. Started with a belt sander to get them the same shape.

    3.jpg

For the curved, horizontal support bands we cut thin strips of poplar from a slab and he soaked them in his pool (), then bent them to shape in a form. We mocked it up with some scrap and it looks good!

    4.jpg

I’ve never used a lathe before so I got a crash course practicing on some pine blanks last week. I got coves fairly easy, but beads are another matter. This week it was go-time… not a lot of practice! His Jet lathe is a pretty nice machine. We’ll drill a hole through these sections (poplar) so they can slip over the oak dowel rod and make some for vertical stair supports. The holes are done on the lathe. You can see a test section on the bench, far right, with a hole already in it. The ends where they join together need some more work.

    5.jpg

We like handmade things, with all their imperfections, rather than machine made perfection. So, while there’s unevenness and not uniformity, we are happy with them so far!

This is all very cool. I was trying to wrap my head around the concept of a spiral library ladder, lol. But the picture explained it and it's very nice and different. Very nice of someone to offer their shop up to you. I find that wood workers are a very generous and giving bunch of folks that are always willing to share. Looking forward to seeing this done.

I’ve used both, the actual router mat from kencraft is a better mat.

I have a 1.75hp Sawstop PCS that I’m considering upgrading with a 3HP motor. Any objections and/or experience doing this?

I've been burning scrap wood from taking pallets apart and from the garage roof and trim project.
    20211106_154313.jpg
There's something very relaxing about tending a fire.
    20211107_164256.jpg
Box is empty so now I can clean out the shop and do it again.
    20211107_163227.jpg
I have this canvas firewood carrier that makes it a lot easier carrying wood up from the basement shop
    20211108_072843.jpg
Like most woodworkers I hang on to every piece of scrap and cut offs until my scrap box is full and the benches start to accumulate piles too. Then I purge and burn it all and start over, lol.

DON'T DO IT! Lol. I just purged my scraps last week, and sure enough, yesterday I needed a specific size and shape but didn't have it.

haha, did the same thing recently, couldn’t close the top on the scrap/burn barrel, had to make some room.

and for those following along, that 1 gallon bucket is the entirety of my scrap from 1200 LF of 1/4x3/4 cedar.

Ha ha! I have more wood than the average wood worker, I'll never use it all in my lifetime. A chainsaw mill has provided me with tons of hardwood. The garage and shop is packed. So I don't cry when I purge and burn. Plus I'm constantly salvaging wood. It's a sickness.

This is part of the garage stash, the rafters are packed too.

This is the pallet breaker I made for taking apart hardwood pallets for the boards. I know where to find pallets near me that are all 5/4" hardwood boards and 3x4 runners. I have found maple, oak, cherry, and even walnut.

Can anyone give me an answer on a wiring question? I’m changing fixtures in my daughters townhouse. Can the black and red wire be tied together? There are only 2 wires on the new fixture, black and white (plus ground).
The red wire is half painted white.
