Check engine light came on 2 weeks ago. Brought truck into local dealership and after inspection, dealership is telling me there may be a valve issue on #1 cylinder causing exhaust valve to stick open and causing low compression on #1 cylinder. They recommend tearing engine down for further inspection. Truck is outside of factory powertrain warranty however I did purchase premium extended warranty thru Toyota when I purchased truck. Thinking I would be covered by my extended warranty, I gave them authorization to tear engine down. Dealership reports a bent valve guide causing the exhaust valve to stick. Extended warranty company denied warranty claim :mad::mad::mad: stating it was listed under their exclusion of parts not covered under warranty. When my dealership saw how PISSED OFF I was, they decided to cover the repairs under warranty. From what I have been reading in this forum, it looks like this valve issue with the #1 cylinder is an on going issue with Toyota. So why have they not done something about this and why are they selling extended warranties that do not cover the issue?

Were you thinking there's a possible correlation between this issue and transmission type?

I suspect a money shift is where they were going.

Mine had leaking #1 valve at 35,000 miles, they were unable to say why (they said "burnt" exhaust valve - maybe faulty head so wasn't sealing?), replaced valve and cylinder head. Now at 84,000 and running fine but disconcerting for sure.

Something doesn't sound right. Warranty company specifically had bent valves under a list of exclusions? Sounds like BS or a shady aftermarket warranty company. I've heard of a dealer taking a just out of warranty vehicle and calling manufacturer or owner doing this to get an extension or better price,,, but damn that was generous!

Maybe, but I would guess there would be more serious carnage than a fucked up valve guide/burnt valve lol.

That's interesting. After reading this I looked at what is covered under my extended powertrain warranty and valve guides are specifically listed as included and covered. Glad they covered it for you, I would have been upset too.

Maybe. The one time I did it, on a road course, it didn’t even hurt the engine. It twisted the output shaft of the transmission (T56).

The money shift damage I saw was a split block between the front first 4 cylinders on 5.0L. He was racing a Porsche on the highway and didn't like that he was losing so he shifted from 4th to 2nd. His exact description, "The engine just shut off". The block split right down the centre. The crank broke in 2 places and went throw the lower block skirts one carrying a piston right out of the block. We never found the timing chain. He blamed me for not building the engine strong enough. You can't overbuild enough for stupid!!!

So not a Toyota warranty. I'm about to hit 36K on my 19 and on the fence if I should by one or not (Toyota warranty).

Wow, it sounds like they're not really covering much,,, as far as the engine is concerned anyways. I'd suspect that carries on to other parts of the vehicle too. What is the name of the warranty (or not warrantied) company?
I'm not claiming I've read in to the details of my Toyota warranty, so I can't say it is or it isn't covered.

    That warranty is completely useless.

Fuck me. That's just about the entire list of things that could go wrong. It'd be easier to list what they might cover?
