3rd gen apple carplay upgrade

G'day,

I have a 2019 TRD Offroad - one year before they introduced Apple Carplay... Does anyone know if the dealer has an upgrade option? We did this in our Mazda CX-5 a couple of years ago.

If there is no upgrade option, does anyone know if you could plug-and-play a later model OEM head unit for my 2019 head unit?

If no to both questions, then I guess i'll have to look at aftermarket units.

I believe a 2021 CarPlay OEM Head Unit will fit your truck. Then it’s just whether you want it wired or wireless

 

It will physically fit, but is wired completely different. Would be much easier and cost effective to replace with aftermarket.

 

I’m in literally the same boat… it was so much easier (and cheaper!) with my CX5

 

I did the swap on my 2019 to a 2021 headunit with apple carplay. All it needed besides the new headunit was a harness to get all the connectors to plug into the new unit. Everything functions as it should.

 

Where did you purchase the harness?

 

Autoharnesshouse.com. I don't think it's listed on their website, but if you contact them they will gladly make one for you. Super high quality.

The harness was about $160 and I bought the head unit used from the classifieds.

 

So everything still works including the existing mic, USB Inputs and steering wheel controls with no issues at all?

 

Yes. Everything functions as normal.

 

IMXPLRN, what site did you find the stereo/media unit on?

 

I bought it from a member here. He had a 2021 Tacoma he took it out of after a couple months of ownership, so it was basically new.

 

If you don’t mind a follow up? Why not go with an aftermarket unit?

one question I had, does display in the instrument cluster still show the now music and navigation screens?

also, was your HU a JBL?

for others interested, I have confirmed that the instrument cluster screen retains all the original screens as before after upgrading from entune 2.0 to 3.0

 

does anybody have an idea of what other model Toyota puts that head unit into? Or how one might find out?

 

@Rixhawz - I’ve heard that the sienna radios are compatible, but I don’t know.

In My case, I went to this website and looked up the 2020 model that matched my 2019:

This gave me the part number I was after, then I was lucky enough to find someone selling one.
