Gas cap warning came on this morning 2 blocks from home. I stopped and took it off and screwed it back on with a few more clicks than before. I really want to be able to use this locking cap but it is not looking promising.

I drove with mine showing that for couple of days then it went away and (knock on wood) hasn't come back...nearly two years now...but make sure is seated good and you feel that's locked when you try to spin it.

My OEM cap broke (the top separated from the bottom half) and I didn’t remember ever hearing or feeling it break when I was taking it on/off, so I don’t know if someone else was messing with it and broke it or what. But I needed a new cap and figured I’d get a locking one since I wasn’t sure how it even got broke... and you never know when some bored neighborhood kid might put something down in there. I bought an Autozone locking one and it threw codes within a few days. So after reading on here, I bought a Stant 10504. Had it for about 4 months now without any issues. One thing I noticed on Amazon/Ebay, etc... that there were a ton of locking caps claiming to be a Stant 10504, but were not actually in the Stant packaging. I suspected that they were cheap knock-offs and “equivalent” no names being sold as Stants. I made sure to find one in an actual Stant box on ebay and it works perfectly. It also has the same thick rubber gasket and vent as the OEM one (which my Autozone had no vent and the gasket was thin).

Mine did come in a stant box and seems to have the thick rubber gasket that you describe. maybe I need to post pictures. still possible it's a counterfeit.

    Here is the box IMG_20211113_015832.jpg

And the cap. It doesn't have the brand name on the cap that I see.
