One of my brothers told me about a new PBS special just starting. "American Veteran" has just aired it's first episode "The Crossing" (about joining and boot camp).
IMHO his special (series) is very well done. I am really looking forward to future episodes.
Check it out and see if you do not agree!

I would love to have watched it if it was filmed in the 90’s or earlier. They are too cuddly to most troops now.

Actually there is a great amount of footage that was in this first installment that was taken during the 1960's (Viet Nam era) 1940's (ww2 era) and early 2000's (mid east wars)
Did you watch the whole first show?
Thanks for reminding me to watch the second installment.

Watched 2 more installments last night - they were great as well. The 2nd is called "the Mission" and the 3rd is called "the return" .
Once again these are super well done -the shows move along at a nice pace with real vet's stories and experiences.
I saw last night where they are available on Amazon Prime as well as on PBS

I wasn't aware of this series, it does sound quite awesome.

I went through Army Basic Training ion 1985. I saw Full Metal Jacket with my dad in theaters. My dad was a Korean War vet (also Army). After the movie, he asked me "Is that was Basic Training is like these days?" I 'splained to him how it was the kinder, gentler Army now (in 1985) compared to Full Metal Jacket. Our Drill Instructor's were not allowed to curse at us, or use demeaning terms (dirtbag, scumbag, etc..). And female soldiers were kept far, far away from us dur Basic Training. These days, as in like right now, I believe the Army is having co-ed Basic Training. My long time next door neighbor's oldest daughter went through Army Basic last year, she posted pics on her Instagram account from the Disco Hut and the pics showed male and female trainees all in the same formation outside the Hut. I didn't ask for confirmation, but it would not surprise me if true......

When I went through AF basic training in ‘98 they were allowed to do anything to you but hit you. Things sure have changed!
