Crystal and Verdi Peak - 9/21

With the National Forests being closed for the past few weeks due to the fires, @SmokingYoda and I were itching to get out. Luckily Tahoe National Forest opened earlier this week, meaning we could finally do a route we had been wanting to complete for a while. We'd start just west of Reno and make our way up to two peaks, and ending the day in Truckee, CA after 8 hours of trails.

This also meant I could finally, FINALLY, air down the 33s for the first time.

    DSC02650.jpg

We made our way up to Crystal peak, our first stop of the day.

    DSC02656.jpg

The smoke from the fires was finally clearing up enough to have blue skies with some minor haze in the distance.

    DSC02657.jpg

We made it up to our first peak but had pretty minimal views, the actual peak being a half mile up some steep terrain with no access roads.

    DSC02673.jpg

We continued on towards Verdi peak, hoping we'd have more luck there.

    DSC02676.jpg

As we climbed, the views of the valley got better and better.

    DSC02681.jpg

Verdi peak is home to an old abandoned fire lookout and man did it have some killer views!

    DSC02709.jpg

    DSC02697.jpg

    DSC02707.jpg

    DSC02715.jpg

We pressed on towards Truckee for a beer and some good food.

    DSC02736.jpg

And stopped for some lake time on the beach before hopping back on pavement.

    DSC02742.jpg

    DSC02746.jpg

It was great to get out for the day and enjoy the truck and views. We'll be up again soon I'm sure!

    Love the pictures.

I'm going out to Bryce area next week. Were you on the road by Tropic reservoir? If so, would you say the forest roads in that area are manageable with a stock 3rd gen OR? I'm an off-roading beginner.

Thank you, glad you like them!

Correct! The Tropic Reservoir area is awesome. We went up a side shoot (Rd 1125 I believe) and found an amazing dispersed campsite. The roads are really easy with some minor obstacles every once in a while, I did everything in 2WD. With a stock OR you've got more than enough capability.

Truckee to Black Rock Desert Day 1 - 09/21

After tackling Crystal and Verdi peaks last weekend, I had an idea of reversing the trip and trying to make it from Truckee to Moon Rocks in Nevada, all dirt. This was largely inspired by a burning desire to camp, but Tahoe National Forest having restrictions on all dispersed camping due to the fire hazards. This time I brought my friend Zac along in his first-gen Sequoia, the plan was to tackle both peaks and make it down into Moon Rocks to camp on Saturday, and meet @SmokingYoda on Sunday, making our way further Northeast towards Black Rock Desert before making our way back home. Zac and I left early Saturday and were on the trail by mid morning.

    Truckee-BRD_09.21-3.jpg

The smoke was extremely prevalent on Saturday, making the views this trail usually provides virtually non-existent. You can barely make out Boca Reservoir, we were just there last week airing up!

    Truckee-BRD_09.21-13.jpg

We made our way further East towards Nevada, enjoying the slightly technical, but mostly fun and easy terrain.

    Truckee-BRD_09.21-15.jpg

    Truckee-BRD_09.21-19.jpg

We made it to Verdi peak and poked around a bit more in the abandoned Fire Lookout.

    Truckee-BRD_09.21-20.jpg

This was pretty cool, a Seismograph device from UNR.

    Truckee-BRD_09.21-21.jpg

Further exploring warranted a cool find, some old Army toys guarding the lookout!

    Truckee-BRD_09.21-25.jpg

Lots of names carved into the wood here...

    Truckee-BRD_09.21-26.jpg

And a very old, but super cool heater for the cold nights people used to spend up here.

    Truckee-BRD_09.21-27.jpg

Making our way over to Crystal Peak, I saw this cool tree. It's crazy how these things can survive and thrive in such a harsh soil.

    Truckee-BRD_09.21-29.jpg

Dropping into Nevada, we were greeted with fall colors making their first appearance. It was a welcome sight after the hot and dry summer we've had.

    Truckee-BRD_09.21-32.jpg

Crossing over highway 395 we made our way into the Moon Rocks area, just North of Reno. We made it just in time to enjoy the sunset with the cows.

    Truckee-BRD_09.21-36.jpg

After the sun set we made our way into camp for the night, excited to meet the rest of or group tomorrow for some more adventure!

Truckee to Black Rock Desert Day 2 - 09/2019

Zac and I woke up the next morning with plans to meet @SmokingYoda. We enjoyed the last bits of the sunrise after waking up a little late.

    Truckee-BRD_09.21-44-2.jpg

    Our camp for the night:

    Truckee-BRD_09.21-49.jpg

Made some pancakes before getting on the road.

    Truckee-BRD_09.21-59.jpg

On our way to meet SmokingYoda we saw some wild horses!

    Truckee-BRD_09.21-64.jpg

We made a very long detour on some graded dirt roads to black rock desert, I didn't take many pictures on the way there but we made it to the flats and had some fun.

    Truckee-BRD_09.21-70.jpg

I even pushed the Tacoma to 100 mph! It took a solid 2-3 mins of the pedal smashed to the floor but I just barely hit it LOL.

All in all it was a rad trip!

    Lost Coast - 10/2021

@SmokingYoda and I escaped to the lost coast last weekend to camp a few nights, the first night we would stay at Usal beach, and the second night we stayed at a remote spot Jacob and I had found our last trip here. We got to Usal later friday night, just in time for the sunset we enjoyed staying so close to the beach.

    Lost Coast 10-2021-1.jpg

Woke up to a neighbor in camp.

    Lost Coast 10-2021-2.jpg

The fog set in that morning, making the beach a bit eerie.

    Lost Coast 10-2021-11.jpg

I'm fairly certain you are not supposed to drive on the beach here but there was a road to get on to the beach, several people camped, and a ton of cars everywhere so we enjoyed a little time driving on the beach, a rare thing to do in California!

    Lost Coast 10-2021-3.jpg

Made it to the next camp close to sunset as well.

    Lost Coast 10-2021-4.jpg

This is probably my favorite campsite I've ever stayed at, and one that is not well known. It's a sweet spot up in the pines about a half-mile up from the beach.

    Lost Coast 10-2021-5.jpg

    The sunset was insane!

    Lost Coast 10-2021-6.jpg

    Lost Coast 10-2021-8.jpg

And we made our way back home, it was a fun little getaway for the weekend!

Cowel intake installed this weekend, it was pretty easy minus cutting three holes in my truck (one for the tube and two on each side for increased airflow). Also cleaned the MAF and Throttle body, and got a new air filter for good measure. So far its running great and I noticed a slight improvement in throttle response. Aiming to get sliders ordered here in the next week or so, then have some suspension issues to address as well.

Rainy weekend here in NorCal, I decided to use this weekend to get rid of the ugly chrome on the bumper and grill surround.

Also picked these 7 inch round spots up on SuperBrightLEDs, they are stupid bright and seem very good quality for the money!

Ran a quick day trip up into Placerville area this weekend to see some fall colors. A bridge burned down a few years ago along the road connecting Placerville to Wentworth Springs, a bypass is available and we ran it a year ago. This year was a bit more technical with some larger rocks and trees washed down into the creek bed. I also hit 180,000 miles on the trail, the truck is still running like it is brand new and I'm sure it will go at least a few 100,000 more if cared for.

Getting some sliders ordered tomorrow through BAMF and I've got a suspension list together with some pieces that will correct geometry as well as supply greater travel in the rear. I'll be compiling these pieces over the next few months and hopefully get it all installed by early 2022.

4x Innovations weld-on slider kit ordered! I was going to go with BAMF but the lead times these days are insane! I've been welding for a few months now and installing these sliders will be a great way to test my welding skills (or lack thereof).

    Poker Flat - 11/21

Zac and I planned on doing Poker Flat before the snow hit, we went this weekend and I'd say it was probably one of the last times to run the trail for the season. We got lucky and had a break in the rain/snow for some awesome conditions, no dust and cool weather!

I headed up the night before to camp on Gold lake, it was snowing when I got there and I was the only one in the whole campground!

    DSC03495.jpg

It was the coldest night I've camped in so far, the truck said it was 25 degrees when I woke up! Luckily the camper and a good sleeping bag kept me warm all night.

It was worth braving the cold as I had a relaxing morning with epic scenery!

    DSC03503.jpg

    DSC03505.jpg

I made some breakfast and headed into Downieville to meet up with Zac.

    DSC03511.jpg

The Sierra Buttes, absolutely stunning this morning.

    DSC03527.jpg

We hit the trail around 10:00 and made our way up to Saddleback Lookout.

    DSC03533.jpg

    DSC03542.jpg

Great views of the Buttes up here from the western side!

    DSC03543.jpg

We pressed on and ran into some snow. We spotted some tracks, not sure what animal these are but there were no footprints anywhere so I can't imagine it was a dog, maybe a wolf? I need to get a book on tracks to keep in the car.

    DSC03549.jpg

    DSC03550.jpg

After the snow we dropped into the canyon, Poker Flat lies at the bottom, it's a good three miles of tough trail and water crossings to get through Poker Flat and up towards La Porte.

This sign means good times ahead!

    DSC03560.jpg

    DSC03576.jpg

I didn't get any pictures in through here but we took some video so I took some frames from that.

Crossing the creek towards Poker Flat.

    IMG_6234.jpg

    IMG_6235.jpg

One of the only structures still here.

    DSC03580.jpg

The climb out of Poker Flat is a fun one!

    IMG_6236.jpg

    IMG_6237.jpg

We made it out of the canyon with no damage for me and a bent lower arm for Zac.

    DSC03588.jpg

    Almost to La Porte.

    DSC03595.jpg

Made it back and airing up.

    DSC03621.jpg

We finished around 5:30, making for a great and long day. We both agreed we'd be back in the summer to run it the other way. I think coming down from La Porte and up towards Downieville would be more challenging but we will have to wait till next year!.

I've got about 1 month of welding experience under my belt, my welds aren't great but good enough for government work. I'll be having someone who knows more than me help and make sure I get these on right. The plan is to get these welded up to the truck next week.

Starting to tack the sliders today, hoping to get painted and on the truck by early next week.

First tacks went down last night on the sliders, it was a tricky time trying to get everything just how we wanted it. Had to cut all the legs but now we have measurements for the other side. Should go smoother from here.

    Jumbo Grade - 11/21

Got out with @SmokingYoda and family this weekend to Jumbo Grade, just South of Reno. On our way up I got tagged by a deer. It scared the crap out of me, it jumped out of the bushes straight into my drivers side door. I got lucky as it only took out my side mirror and slightly dented my door.

    IMG_6298.jpg

The rest of the day went a lot smoother, we were treated to great views of Carson Valley and the backside of Mount Rose and the Sierras.

It was a great day, and I've already got a new side mirror on the way. Watch out for deer!
