What have you done to your Tacoma today? 1st Gen Edition

finally got around to wheels and tires and am stoked with how it all came out - details and more pics in fun places to come soon!

 

The best upgrade shy of a proper retrofit is going to be Hella E-Codes and some Philips 150+ or GE Megalights or what ever @crashnburn80 recommends at the moment for H4. You will also need an aftermarket or custom made relay harness to handle and deliver the extra voltage.

 

Nothing like machining brand new wheels lol. How were the beadlocks to install and balance? I have seen them kinda be a PITA to maintain, part of the reason I haven't tried to go down that rabbit hole yet.

 

I really want a set of Method 108s, not sure I want to pay for them though.

 

They’re not hard at all to install, assuming you enjoy tightening bolts over and over again for 3 hours lol. I ran into an interesting issue though - the bead bundle on Nittos is apparently thinner than other manufacturers, so the gap between the inner and outer beadlock rings didn’t match the spec at each torque interval. You’re supposed to torque all the bolts down to 6 ft-lbs, then 12, then 20, and the gap is supposed to be like 3/16”, then 1/8”, then touching. With the trail graps the rings were basically touching at 6 ft-lbs, so I called OMF but they said torque them all the way to 20 ft-lbs and if they hold air they’re fine. So far so good.

Yeah, working up the courage. Custom springs are intimidating for some reason.

I figured they'd be closer to $1000--I could take a scenic drive to pick them up though, which is nice.

Part of why I haven't gone aftermarket at all yet. I can't justify the cost for something I am going to tear up real bad doing dumb shit unless it does net me better functionality via back spacing or beadlocks.

I guess it's kinda set it and forget it so as long as they balance okay they sound okay... hmmmm.

 

I got a quote from Lew (Alcan) a couple months ago.

Custom packs were $1100 with no Ubolts or bushings. After shipping and hardware (For me in CA) the total was going to be north or $1500.



Fuck that... So I bought the Chevy 63 Ideal kit from Ruff Stuff. Plans changed lol

 

Where did you get the lower mount brackets?

 

Damn they must have gone up in price or something. That's ridiculous.

I've been thinking about getting some new progressive rear springs, but not for that price. Fuck....

Ya, I was thinking 8 or 9 hundred bucks, maybe a thousand after shipping. But over 1500? Ya, no.

All of my hesitations about Chevy 63s went away at that point.

 

Just talked to Deaver and they run $900 for custom ones and about $100 for shipping to cali. Includes bushings, U-bolts are $45.

Sounds like that would likely be my route when the time comes.
Might have to be sooner than later with the rate at which prices are increasing....

 

Man, I called their shop (Deaver) a few times and sent them at least 4 emails. Never got an answer from them. I would have driven down and picked them up. Oh well. I already have the 63s and the kit, I just have to get to it.

 

The shipping was what was really going to kill the deal on the Alcans for me (from CO to CA). Also... I was told a custom set of springs was going to be an 8 to 10 week leadtime.
