Transmission shifts hard into second.

FWIW - shift firmness, is throttle position sensor dependent. That is why the shift firmness changes depending how you drive the vehicle. That's why your shifts feel different based on the degree of acceleration. Fluid changes will not alter shifts controlled by the TPS. (some have reported that Pedal Commander changes the TPS and shifting)

 

Hello, revisiting this post. I have a similar issue. I have an 05 acces cab v6 4.0 auto that shifts hard from 2nd to 3rd on upshift as well as down shift. Ive flushed the tranny twice and no difference was noticed. Any advice?

 

Mine shifts a little harder in winter but usually it’s when going into overdrive. I’ve read where this is attributed to the spline yoke which requires disassembly and lubrication but the noise/thud will come back. Some folks have installed grease fittings for easier lubing. Of course this could very well not be the issue with OP, just thought I would share.

 

Whats your mileage ?
There are a lot of things that can cause a harsh shift .
99% of the time , issues reside in the valve body

Sourced a second hand tranny for ~550$. Would replacing the whole transmission fix my issue, or is it possible there is another issue outside the tranny causing this ?

 

My 2008 also shifts hard first to second, fluid change had no affect. Curious to see if you guys come up with something.

 

would swapping out the valve body change anything? @gearcruncher

Hello all, figured I would put some closure to this thread. I ended up replacing the trans. It started to shudder in reverse and from what I understand second gear and reverse have some connection. I found a used trans with 50km on it and had it swapped in for 2200 including parts.
