Hopefully he wasn’t on the bomb crew that mistakenly uploaded live nukes on the 52 that the flight crew then transported unknowingly from Minot to Barksdale, where the 52 sat on the flightline unguarded for a day. That one was a *little* controversial. The president & joint chiefs aren’t very happy when they get a call about multiple nuclear weapons going unaccounted for and being unsecured for 36 hours…

5th Bomb Wing is host wing @ Minot, they fly B-52s. I was in the tenant wing there, the 91st Missile Wing, in the 91st OMMS, the 740th Missile Squadron & the 91st MXS. We represent 2 legs of the doctrine of nuclear triad.

Kelly Flinn was the big 5th Bomb Wing newsmaker when I was pulling duty up there.

5th Bomb Wing organizational patch is this guy. KIAI O KA LEWA = Guardians of the Upper Realm

Wow, what a fiasco! Well to be more specific, he was a sergeant at Minot for 4 years 2013-2017 then went to Vandenburg, actually just made it back to Minot for another 4 a few weeks ago. I hope he had nothing to do with it, for his sake.

They almost lost him because after 8 years working his job they were going to switch him to ICBMs which he had no experience with but once he started making his exit plans they found him his old job back in Minot.

The nuke incident happened in 2007, so likely before he ever was there. I’d been gone for nearly 10 yrs by then, thankfully. The nuclear enterprise is super intensive when things are going very well- imagine how awful things would be after that incident. The scrutiny, the demands, the repercussions would be absolutely insane, but they should be after such an egregious oversight. It obviously bled over into the ICBM community too, so many of my old colleagues had to pay for the transgression of an entirely different unit in an entirely different command.

Sounds like he was more than a bomb loader, likely a Missile & Space Systems Elec Journeyman, which is highly technical. ICBM & ACM/SRAM/ALCM(ACM/SRAM/ALCM = Advanced Cruise Missile/Air Launched Cruise Missile/Short Range Attack Missile, which are weapons B-52s carry or have carried) is essentially the same career field(2M0X1A & 2M0X1B - A denotes ICBM, B denotes ACM/SRAM/ALCM), and the initial training is identical. While it didn’t happen much during my time, over the last 25 yrs or so there has been a fair amount of transfer of personnel between the ICBM community & the air launched community. I was 2M0X1A.

You mentioned Vandenberg AFB, which is where we do our ICBM test launches. Other than for tech training, I’m unaware of a reason why an air launch guy would be needed at Vandy unless he was being brought into the ICBM community.

Reminds me of the time when someone accidentally set a truck on fire with a burrito wrapper in the storage yard and they took away our frozen burrito privileges.

Thanks for all the interesting info, but I find myself at the end of it not knowing enough to speak any more intelligently about his role at the bases lol. I know he mainly teaches, and is apparently important enough for them to work to make a place for him rather than lose him.

Wow, what a memory. I worked at the Air Combat Command’s Command Center at Langley AFB and was on shift the night I got the call from the Barksdale wing commander saying “I found something Minot lost and I need the General on the phone now.” What a night that was.

finally had time yesterday to install these SS3 fog lights on my Taco. So far im liking them when i drove at night. It is brighter than the stock lights and not too overly expensive.

    Now this is a tragedy.

We absolutely used to wrap burritos in aluminum foil and stuff them in our engine bays for them to be warmed through after a trip out to a launch facility or launch control facility. My life without engine bay burritos would be incomplete. They were our go-to food when we were carrying classified equipment because stops of any kind were a giant no-no while doing so.
