I have a 2021 2.7 liter. I had a 2016 3.5 liter. The 2016 tranny was extremely annoying. The 2021 is leaps and bounds better. Some of this may be due to the different gearing, but if the new 3.5 transmission works this well I wouldn't sweat it. You need to be the judge.

I don't understand why the Off Road base gives you extra goodies for less money. This is basically a glorified SR5 with a locker, why would it cost more than the TRD Off Road?

Wouldn't be surprised if you can't find an OR with a lower MSRP at a dealer who has also been allocated a Trail Edition.

Went in to my dealer today and ordered a 22 Trail in Army Green. 43,800+tax. Estimated to come in 10-12 weeks. The Trail Edition package (3,765) here was only offered in conjunction with a Tech package (600), Parking Sonar/Premium Audio and Nav Package (1710). Making its total $6075.

IKR, the TE ends up having the 3rd most expensive base price Tacoma model only behind the Pro and Limited. I am sure Toyota is happy as they sell every Tacoma they can make.

I was originally pretty interested in the TE and intended to snag one when they became available but the pricing makes zero sense. I put a deposit on a '22 DCSB Off Road last week and it will come in about $600 less than the TE above - with LED lights and fogs, tech package, mudguards, hood/fender/mirror paint film, floor liners & sill protectors... and the TRD lift, installed.

There must be something about the TE that I'm missing?

Unless I'm missing something, the standard features of the Trail and OR are the about the same except the OR gets the crawl control, fog lights, LED headlights, push to start? These are features I can easily live without, and I hate push to start haha. For a similar price I get everything I need + (most) everything I wanted: 16in Bronze TRD wheels, Bronze Pro grill, blackout package, removable storage boxes, small lift, all weather mats. Having it come like this stock keeps me from jumping into a few thousand in modifications on a brand new truck too lol.

Jesus prices are insane. I paid 40,500 for my pro out the door in 18 and thought that was a lot for a taco. My how the times have changed.

I think Toyota priced the TE knowing it has the things people mainly want which is looks and a few features. I’m guessing most folks who aren’t on TW aren’t as scrupulous about what’s better truck or which has better value; they just want the one that looks better and meets their needs without having to do mods. For those folks I guess it’s worth the extra money but most of us would rather just do the mods ourselves. It’s kind of like prebuilt pc vs one you build yourself.

Out of curiosity I priced a Trail edition with similiar options to the most commonly found OR to compare apples to apples.
$80 more to the 03102 zipcode over the TRDOR w/ TRD lift kit as an option (I'll assume a 1,500 installation fee on top of that).

The "trail edition with options" was no tonneau cover, Blind sport and cross traffic collision since tow and TSS is standard on all 4x4 V6 tacoma's since 2020.

This is the same options to the Technology package on the TRDOR (please feel free to double check and make sure one does not include stuff over the other.)

I'm just going to go out on a limb and say it's not worth it, especially if you can come up with 2-3K for a whole new set of tires and 5100's or the TRD kit on sale.

If the trail edition came in at 36,5 or 37,5 so about 2-3K under the OR, I'd be all for it as a recommendation. But it seems like you are trading off built in electronic equipment in the OR for what is basically a bunch of bolt ons (rims, struts, grill) and a feature that is easily fixed with a good yeti and a cargo strap.

That seals the deal for me. Why buy a Trail when you get more for the same money with an OR?

This is a really good analysis. I think this is being sold to those people who don't want to take the time to mod their truck. There’s always a premium for that.

Like you, I'd rather just get an OR then add those bolt on things and come in at a cheaper price. The things I like about the Trail over the OR are the SR5 tail lights, bronze wheels, and lift. I would just remove the cooler, trade the grille, and debadge the "Trail" and other logos. If the Trail came with the blacked out headlights from the from the 16-19 Pros I’d be more tempted but probably still opt for an OR or just an SR5.

I called a dealer local to me (NOLA) and a dealer in Virginia and they both said 8 month wait for a Trail Edition…

NOLA dealer also quoted me a $48K………
