It’s because everyone wants to haul away from NY at this time and few want to come north for the winter. It may pay you to buy a used trailer and sell it when you get south. And you can make a pretty good enclosed trailer out of a cheap flatbed with 2 by 3’s and a good tarp held taught.

Are you doing this thru the Uhaul website? Try going to your locale Uhaul and asking them how much for a one way trailer.

Did you try changing the destination to a bigger city? I'm guessing so, but just curious.

    Those rates are ridiculous!

My dad actually offered to drive one up here but after meals and $400+ for fuel it just didn't seem worth it to save a couple hundred bucks.

Both are Stock - built correct from the start.
Yes, UHaul prices are up. A lot of people moving. Check out the prices for rentals going opposite directions. They’re much lower.

I'm horrible at geography, will you have the trailer the same approx number of days as the last move? If your looking online I think all the add ons and insurance get added which raises the price. Granted I have never rented a trailer and returned it across state lines, a likely flawed thought perchance uhaul will have to tow it to a different location/area since where you are going already has a surplus of trailers and elsewhere is a shortage.

Probably not worth the effort but could you buy a cheap trailer, use it to move then sell it when you get there?

Just in case anyone was wondering what you get for an $800 uhaul rental trailer:

    OP....for future reference.

I have rented both U-haul (trailers & trucks), got fed up with their equipment. Took a Penske truck for a move. Oh.....so much better. I'll never go back to U-haul.

Next time, take a look at Penske. I'd think for $800 you could get a small Penske truck.

I needed a trailer only for this move. Uhaul is the only option besides buying and selling an enclosed trailer

My kid and their partner bought a house in ABQ and drove from AVL recently. They rented a 24' UHaul truck. Didn't complain about the price but said they'll be better off buying a decent trailer and pulling it with the Tundra for the next trip.

On hour 5 now of getting this unfucked. Had to leave the original trailer in place (in the fucking Bronx), drive an hour across the city to pick up a good one, drive it back to the original spot so movers can transfer my shit. This is ridiculous
