I bought my 2021 Tacoma Trd off-road 3 months ago. I have a around 2,000 miles on it. I was backing into a parking spot this evening as soon as I started backing up I could barely turn the steering wheel. It drove fine when I got up to the speed limit on the way home but when I slow down the steering gets stiff. I checked the power steering fluid it’s ok. Any ideas what could cause this?

The dealer called me today said the rack failed. They’re replacing the rack, all the hoses, steering pump and the reservoir.

    On a '21?

    This does not bode well.

Hopefully it just a one off problem, not a supplier production problem.

I hope so!! I just hope this fixes the problem and don’t have to keep going back for this or something else.

Hopefully it was just a fluke and no one else has any problems.

I beat the shit out of my truck, including offroad to the point of needing to get it realigned because the steering wheel was about 20 degrees off when holding straight (due to me pressing up against a rock in a weird way on the Rubicon).

No problems at all, the techs were able to realign it and it's driving great. almost 14k miles on my 2021 OR. If there was a common problem with the rack I think I (or someone that wheels like me) would have found it already. OPs problem sounds like a weird fluke

I have a '21 Sport with 5918 miles...I have not experienced any power steering issues.

I did however, start my truck and put it in reverse before the display fully loaded. After I put it in Drive, the screen stayed blank but the radio station I was listening continued. I pressed the power button but the music still played.

It wasn't until I got to a stop light and put it in Park and the screen finished cycling through start-up. I guess my being in a RUSH didn't let the display system fully load on the screen...thus creating a blank screen.

When you mean barley, was it like just stiff or was it like you had to muscle it? Any dead spots?

Yeah glad it happened now so they can go ahead and get everything replaced. I’ve had it off-road once nothing rough yet. I had to muscle it to get it to turn when sitting still. Loosened up and drove fine once I got moving.
