OBA -> On Board Air Mega Thread & BS

This is probably my favorite setup I've seen yet.

I don't like the expedition essentials mount despite using dead space that I don't use for anything else because they decided to leave the top open on it and I've seen multiple posts about the whole cabinet filled with mud/dust/water. ARB compressors are expensive, I don't want it failing prematurely.

I don't like the under hood mounts because it takes the space where a dual battery setup would go.

I don't like the R4T option of mounting it in front of the radiator as I imagine it would diminish performance of the radiator's ability to cool the engine.

This setup looks very clean and uses a spot not used for anything else. Do you have a parts list by chance? Do you know if this setup could mount an ARB single? I don't have lockers and have no need to duals, I just want to air up tires.

 

The setup where you have the quick disconnects looks awesome, I really like it!

You need a lot more air for tires than for lockers.

 

Where do you guys get your wiring for the compressors? I've only ever bought small quantities of smaller gauges for other projects. I'm finding 25 ft of 4 gauge wire to be in the $50 range. Is it really going to get any cheaper than that with non CCA cables?

 

Yeah a single compressor will still fill them fine. Instead of 3 minutes per tire, it will be 5, no big deal.

Here is a run down of what was used. I think I've listed it all, just make sure you have a game plan before going and buying things to prevent buying something you don't need. Obviously you'll need an air compressor, in this case an ARB single or twin.

Mounting Bracket:
This would be the mount for that location with an ARB single. I can't confirm that this will work on your 3rd gen as I used the mount for the twin, but I did use a 2nd gen mount on my 3rd gen. The base of the two mounts looks very similar, it relocates the power steering reservoir and uses that space. Search around a bit before pulling the trigger to make sure. I've linked both, I used the one for the twin along with the linked custom bracket I picked up on TW second hand

Hose:
I went with an ARB stainless one, 3.5 feet fit my needs. You could use nylon tubing but make sure you get the proper fittings if you go that route.

Used the elbow fitting on the compressor body and the straight fittings on the quick disconnect.

QD Coupler:
I picked up this one, you could probably piece this together for a little cheaper if you wanted at the hardware store. I replaced the hose fitting supplied with the one above from ARB to adapt to my hose.

QD Mounting Bracket:
I picked this up and rattle canned it. Also found a machine screw lying around that matches the threads of the existing hole I used to attach it I don't have a link.



That's generally it, I used teflon tape on all the threads which I had on hand. I can provide some info on wiring if your interested but that'll be unique to everyone's individual setup. You'll also need some tools and an afternoon.

I have the ARB in the expedition Essentials bedside mount with the dust shield on top. I tried my best to box in that corner of the truck with some plastic liner material I bought. Unfortunately it still gets some dust but not nearly as much as if it was exposed.... Here are some photos of what I did and the link to the material I used. It's comforable-ish with a heat gun as well, cuts easy with shears and I punched the holes using a leather hole punch set I bought years ago. No clue how long it will last but it'll do for now and it was cheap.

They make a shield for the top of it? Or did you make a shield for the top of it?

It looks like a good bit of the top would still be open, so it may not be that effective.

 

"Debris shield" according to them. It just covers the filter assemblies also make sure you mount it as low as possible as it rubbed against some of the support brace/ribs on the edge of the bed so I had to cut part of that part off. You can unscrew the filters with the dust cover on - it's a pain but doable...

Yes majority of the top is still exposed to water, debris still. This only protects the filters at most. I did the splash shield/fender liner to help with that issue. Granted if I go through a deeper puddle it's all getting wet regardless...

Single ARB. No mount, drilled a couple holes in the sheet metal off to the side of the radiator and mounted using the plate that came with the compressor. It was tight getting in their to bolt it down but doable. I will eventually extend the air connection to a more convenient location.

Hate how the wiring looks but I guess i'm the only one that will see it.

Now off to find the filter and cap that I misplaced during install...

 

Hey guys, air fittings are a different language to me. I installed my compressor with a SLEE mount in the passenger corner. Attached is the manifold. I would like to run an airline along the the passenger side up front through the radiator area and grill and mount on my bumper. What kind of hose do I need? Fittings? Been trying to look at Amazon, but I feel like I keep getting fuel lines.

 

You can use 1/4” air line(1/8”ID) or air tool hose in a variety of sizes. Not wild about ptc (push to connect) fittings for storing pressurized air but it’s fine for fills. If you use compression fittings then you need to use brass inserts and nylon compress sleeves instead of brass sleeves when using flexible tubing. If you go with barbed fittings be sure to use wire ring clamps instead of band clamps which don’t work too well on small tubing sizes.

 

I used 1/4” DOT hose and push to connect fittings. Been holding hair for over a year now no leaks also had PTC fittings on my old truck with train horns also no issues.

I was on the AP off-road website and saw that they have a harness that can hold two independent switches for the arb dual compressor.

“Unlike the competitors, each harness comes standard with wiring for both compressor and locker solenoids. Another bonus is that the compressor harnesses include an integrated switch circuit that allows you to mount a rocker switch in the bed, the cab, or both to control the compressor. Both switches are independent of one another so the compressor can be turned on even if the other switch is in the “OFF” position. Switches are not included.”

has anyone attempt this themselves?

 

Looking to change up my twin compressor setup and mount it in more of a hard to get to area, so I want to plumb a chuck in the front and rear of the truck. Any suggestions on what size/kind of tubing and fittings I should be looking at?

 

I've had good luck with 3/8" air line made for semi brakes and corresponding push to connect fittings.
