Just changed oil in my new 2021 TRD off-road 3.5 what concerns me is how black the paper filter was… is this normal for a first Oil change??

Looks normal. I had a 2016 Camry and the filter looked like that at every oil change.

Dark oil doesn’t mean that’s it’s bad, you are good to go.

As shockingly as it may sound, clear motor oil or filter is not a good sign. That means that they are not doing it's job isolating and suspending debris particles.

Curious, did you ask the dealer if they would do one 1500 miles early and they said no..or did you plan to do all your changes?

I was watching a live Q&A on a 200k sub channel and first oil change timing came up. It was said in there that factory oil has additives that aid break in and shouldn't be changed early. Maybe that's why it looks darker?

Honestly I was just bored and the dealerships nearly an hour from my house it’s just easier for me to do it myself I figured it was time for a “ Breaking in change”

I tried to get my dealer to do one at 5,000 miles they refused.
Kinda pizzed me off because these oil-changes and tire rotations are part of the 'deal'... like coupons if you ask me.

I had a private shop do it at 5k.

My paper filter looked very similar during break in period. Normal.

Did they mention new Corvettes and Mercedes have come with off the shelf Mobil1 for several years now?

Would love for a trained oil expert to chime in on these 'break in additives'.

Don't know about break-in additives....frankly I would be surprised if the engine isn't shipped with the same regular oil you can buy from a Toyota dealer, but the oil analysis in post #13 shows high moly on the first oil sample....so it is possible. In any case, I always do the first oil change on a new engine very early (500 to 1,000 miles) because every time I have done it, the silicon numbers are sky high. They settle way down by the second or third oil change.

I think the OEM Toyota branded oil.

I just sent in a sample from the 70k mile change.

Geez, my tundra always had clean oil after 15k+ oil changes once a year. Had that truck for nearly 19 years, and almost 300k miles. When i sold it the truck it still ran like new didn't touch a drop of oil.
On the other hand seen gm 305 motors with 3k mile oil changes black as hell. They were lucky to go 150k miles before major issues.
