Many backroads. But if coming from the south, try east on 167, then north into Bodie on Cottonwood Canyon Rd. Subaru-friendly.

Picked up this 1934-vintage map of the Death Valley area in an antique store the other day. Now I need to find some backing and a frame.

I will be more than happy to show you the way, Blevin. Let me know when you are ready.

I sense a TW trek coming up

Of course Defense mine just ate one of my tires, and there is a 2 month wait for new ones, which means 6 months.

Thanks for the offer Andy. It will be a while before I go so you should be able to get your tires. Tires are actually a concern for me. I plan on upgrading to C range tire for better durability without thanking the MPG hit for E rated tires but then I see all the reports of DV shredding tires and I get concerned.

I also have the dilemma of a long planned retirement road trip to Alaska that I want to do. I’m hoping Covid restrictions minimize and I can get that going for next year. DV will happen for me at some point.

285 75/16 5 years old, not much tread, aired down to about 20. I was yapping and didn't pay attention to this one rock.
Just don't go on certain trails and you will be fine

I have a 2nd spare that size (either a 70 or 75) if you need it. It's still brand new, or at least never really used. You could take it and replace it later.

i've driven down a few times, and never met anyone going up. other than this photo of one vehicle blockage in October 2019. blocked for about a week.

    83F88126-68D2-4474-8F50-BB29023C8021.jpg

thinking about the location of this vehicle, I was speculating that the driver had most likely driven down the road, came to the increasingly more difficult sections, and was able to turn around and head back up, but not make it. I did not see any indication that this was a 4x4 vehicle, and in my opinion, would not have got this far up road from the bottom.

Andy @CVYota and I went up a while back, was fun. Definitely try to avoid negotiating passing at a tight spots.

This summer I passed a group going down in silver canyon in the white mountains, while I was going up. Super tight off camber makes heart go fast, my kids be like, oh wow, that's a log way down

That's with the Kevlar sidewalls. I've heard scary things about the drive up to the Defense Mine.
