How do you know when to replace shocks? What to buy?

How do you know when your shock need to be replaced and how do you go about choosing new one?

It's an item that should be checked in a safety inspection (if you have them in your state). You push down quick and release on each of the corners of your truck (one at a time). The truck should return to normal height and stay there. There should be very little 'bouncing'. If, when you release the pressure, the truck doesn't settle back to normal height and stay but rather keeps bouncing for a while, then you need new shocks. It'll also feel like a boat on the road, every bump you hit with make the truck keep bouncing, etc.

As far as choosing new shocks, there are many options... Bilstein 5100's seem to be very popular on this site but they are far from your only option.

 

Shocks should be replaced when there's leakage, physical damage (dents on the housing, etc.) or fade (ride bouncier than usual). The bushings at the top and bottom attachment points could also be worn and make funny noises when going over bumps. For street use you can get OEM replacements or basic aftermarkets offered at Midas, Active Green+Ross etc. If you want to get a lift at the same time, look for Bilstein 5100, OME... sky's the limit.

You can! i think you can get just about 3" with them on the top setting and if you replace the coils with Eibachs or OME you can get just over 3" set a 0.
