Tesla style head unit

That is a very good possibility too I am just happy everything works like it’s designed to unlike some other android units I have had.

 

The problem I see with that is that you won’t be able to use Apple CarPlay because it used WiFi. I don’t think 2 WiFi things can connect to the head unit at once.

 

Super interested to learn how you wired your garage door opener? My opener still uses DIP switch codes to set the frequency on the remote and door opener so they connect, cant it be done with this kind?

You are absolutely correct you can only run one wifi device at a time.

 

Yes it has a built in mic and so far seems to work just fine for me.

 

Hey guys, hoping someone can clarify something for me - i feel like i've seen some conflicting info between the site , here and u tube...

1. Does Apple Car Play work via Bluetooth or Wifi ?
2. What vehicle stats do you get to see through the included obd adapter ?
3. Does anyone know if I use Lead Nav on an ipad pro would that show up on the screen via BT ?

@Airdog I think there might be away to run race radio comms through this too... I'm going to grab one of these becasue Harry and I have been talking about a single screen solution for Lead Nav and radio comm so I'm going to experiment a bit.

 

I can’t answer your first few questions because the unit I had was in a GX470. But looking at the photos in this thread and seeing all the other iterations of Tesla units out there, the screens generally suck terribly. Mine came with an anti-glare protector but the real issue is the screens don’t get very bright. I have no issues seeing the Alpine screen in my Lexus but the Tesla screen was barely visible in broad daylight.

 

I'm kinda wondering if all the Tesla style units are made by a single manufacturer and being rebranded for sale. Google searching brings up a few different sites, and they all look pretty much the same. One site has a Tesla style unit for the Tundra with and without physical climate control knobs.

 

Yes. I posted something similar on page 1 of this thread but essentially there are limited actual manufacturers of the unit. And majority of the units are a universal build with custom outer fascia for the specific vehicle and matching vehicle specific harnesses.

Rhino radios, Phoenix automotive, the company selling this taco unit, etc are all pulling from a similar source. I’m sure these will be available on alibaba for cheaper than reseller price.

 

Apple carplay initially connects though bluetooth. Once a Bluetooth connection is established it will turn on the hotspot and connect through Wi-Fi. It also disconnects the blue tooth at this point.

You only see rpm and speed though the adapter and as far as I can tell, only the console app can use this info.

I don’t think your lead nav app will show though Bluetooth. You might be able to use the easy connect app and mirror your iPad to the screen. I can mirror my iPhone but never tried an iPad.

 

The radio parts are typical of other android Tesla screen radios. The difference with this unit is the air-pane board and the canbus board. Both these boards are combined into one and made only for the Tacoma. The Tacoma has all manual ac controls which is different from the tundra and other cars. If the controls were digital like most vehicles all you would need is a canbus controller.


I have no issues with screen brightness even during the day.

 

so if you are in an area with bad cell signal does your car play disconnect or does the wifi / hotspot connection from your phone to the unit not rely on on cell signal ?

 

I have a few areas where reception is bad. My carplay does not disconnect but if I am listening to to Apple music that relies on cellular it will stop playing. In those cases I can just listen to music that is stored on my phone.

 

Also when connected to carplay it’s more of a adhoc connection between the phone and the headunit. It does not share the cellular signal. Meaning you cannot browse the internet on the head unit or use cellular data on the headunit.

 

Does this work with the factory microphone in the tacoma?

It does not work with the factory microphone. It does have its own built-in microphone.

I cant confirm the heated seats. If it was a stock option it is possible.

Wireless CarPlay has three requirements, a Bluetooth connection, a Wi-Fi access point, and location data. Here’s is a simplified breakdown of the entire process:

1. To initialize the connection the phone uses Bluetooth to send a signal to the head unit requesting to connect.
2. Once the Bluetooth connection is made the phone will request wireless credentials to the Wi-Fi access point.
3. Upon confirmation the head unit will send the wireless credentials to the iPhone, which will cause the phone to search and join the Wi-Fi access point.
4. After the Wi-Fi connection has been established, the Bluetooth signal will disconnect and all audio and video will be transferred over Wi-Fi.
5. And now you’re set, you now can use CarPlay wirelessly.

I was just looking through my box of wire harnesses and I came across the OBDII connector. The one I showed above was from the test unit, since it was already installed in the car I did not swap it out when I put the new unit in.

The one that came with the new unit is just like yours. So I guess that's what everyone is going to get.
