    That's a fact.My wifes highlander has DRL but you can turn them off & just operate lights normal on the switch, she has finally learned to turn the lights on when in conditions where the rear is needed. She use to get mad when i drove it & turned the DRL's off, she would forget & drive around with no lights on when needed.

    I see the problem being "parking lights" or any setting where the dash is illuminated while the head/tail lights are not. That's the issue, people think their lights are on because the dash is lit up. The "first click" on the control should be done away with, dash lights linked with head/tail lights only, and don't get me started on people's brights...

    Happy for this. Manufacturers simply are not going to just give a fuck... All these new LEDs are far too bright. We have a '20 X3 and it is ridiculously bright (and far too blue). Only part I do like is they are sort of adaptive...they turn with the car, ect.

    Oh, was there some other new regulations or laws that were implemented? Because the one being discussed here was about allowing manufactures to offer more advanced lighting that is currently banned under the woefully out of date existing lighting regulations.

    On a related note, it sure will be nice to have lights that offer high beam level lighting at all times yet don't blind oncoming drivers.

    Yes it is called auto high beam and it is option on new Taco like mine. It basically dims you high beams when coming close to on coming traffic.

    Adaptive =/= auto

    They are different systems. The auto high beams on the Tacoma are an on/off system. Adaptive are a much more dynamic system.

    Watch the videos in OPs first link.

    This is actually a good thing. it allows sectional dimming so your vehicle can keep the high beams on the ditch side and only auto dim the parts pointing at an oncoming vehicle. It's a best of both worlds.

    There are many times I'm driving on highways at night that there is to much oncoming traffic to ever use high-beams but without them the ditch is so dark you'd never see a deer coming on time.

    The tech has been here for years now, just held back by outdated laws. It will make everyone safer, not dumber.

    So theres some type of sensor to determine which sections to turn on/off? In which case more wires, more components, more things to go wrong, more to replace in the event of an accident, etc

    Nice

    Now make amber turn signals a requirement so they don't just blend into the brake lights....

    Its almost like you don't have to buy it if you don't like it.

    but some DO want it, so it sure would be nice if the laws didn't PREVENT its use for those who don't mind the cost and complexity. This change isn't FORCING manufactures to use this technology, its a change to the laws to ALLOW them to use it.

    This

    And prevent turn signals that are down low in the bumper away from the running and stop lamps...
