When I took my tig class many many moons ago the instructor told me to treat aluminum like cast iron.
Preheat vigorously, weld vigorously, cool like molasses..
He would use a torch after welding an aluminum item and heat a big overlapping surface and then
Cool it slowly for like hours.

The welder at the other shop told my boss to get me to weld it with stainless filler, he said that should do it. We will see shortly.

Boss went and got some 309 stainless filler rod, welded one side and it cracked too. I’m guessing our little econo tig just isn’t big enough. Boss is taking them to the place with the big tig.

Would have been nice to see a try with preheat but understand don't want to be putsing around all day with it. I know often at my work various things require a pre and post heat as part of the weld process. Even if it's with a rosebud

I did not pre heat it, all we have is a torch. I really don't think our tig has enough amps to do it even if I did preheat it, it's only rated for 1/4" material.

Yeah we have a mig but they have to be water tight, if there is the tiniest bit of impurity it will leak.

I tig welded 8 of these about a month ago and fought leaks on 5 of them. I had to weld some of them 3 times then test them under pressure. They got chrome plated and shipped. Have 11 more after these 5 to do.

Hmm. The weld shop I used to work at used MIG exclusively, and they were welding gas pipe. That and sub-arc welding.

Edit: I just realized that you are only doing 1 pass. Forget I said anything.

One pass and I’ve never been to school to learn how to weld
