I hear a clunk in the rear end of my 2020 Tacoma when I hit bumps. I had a 2007 and never had this noise.

Truck runs super smooth otherwise, it feels like I’m floating on air during normal operation.

We had a lot of snow in the past 24 hours, today I noticed the clunking today as I was driving in my residential area over the frozen bumpy tundra. Every bump was a clunk. I could see in my driver side mirror the box moving at the gap between the box and the cab. The movement was in perfect unison with the clunk.

Is this just normal flexing of the box on a 3rd generation? I noticed in some of the images of accidents posted here that the box does appear to breakaway or shift quite a bit.

Manual or automatic transmission? The manuals are very clunky on every bump when in neutral or the clutch is pressed.

a lot of people report that their bed wasn't tight. may want to torque the bed bolts. u-bolts is another one that is commonly undertorqued.

I haven't noticed any clunking in my 2020 yet. Maybe worth a check if loose rear axle leaf spring U bolts. I once read somewhere on this forum to check them.

Spock says the first step is tightening the bed bolts.

I think this could be it. I did have a sidewall tear the first month of ownership and Toyota put the spare back up for me after the damaged tire was replaced on the rim. Could be rattling like a banjo string.

The chain can make noises, but what does that have to do with seeing the bed move in conjunction with the clunk?

good question, its hard to say without seeing it. If its normal flex as the rear is on the bump it could be whats causing the chain to bang....if its abnormal flex and more in line with the beds movement it could be loose. Hopefully its just a loose bolt or two and no big deal for OPs sake!

The noise he’s hearing might be the clunk of the chain, regardless of whether or not the bed is moving also.

I now think that is normal bed movement. At the time I was trying to correlate it with something.

Once the chain was suggested it tied into the type of noise I’m hearing. I never even considered the tire chain. Now it all makes sense.
