People will still drive like they did in the 70's when there were block long lines for gas. They will buy scooters, motorcycles, and small cars like they do in the majority of other countries where fuel is high.....

Those who can afford the trucks for fun will have them. Those who cannot will drive CR-Zs and hybrids.

    Life goes on.....always does.

I'm actually thinking of trading in my taco right now. 16mpg is ridiculous for a truck of this size. I drive an average of 80km/day to and from work and my monthly fuel bill is a new truck payment! I could drive a full size crewcab 4x4 V8 powered vehicle and get better mileage! Not to mention towing!

Right down to the individual who trades an upside down vehicle, wraps the excess in the new one that will drop thousands as soon as the front wheel goes over the curb,,,

The financial mess is caused by millions of people SIGNING "promise to pays" on millions of credit card slips, home and car loans...from there it started. All those millions of stupid decisions based on "future income" that they "assumed" would be there forever. Spending more than they earn in a month. Using credit cards as an extra paycheck.

From that banks resold those millions of bad loans and they became the bad guy whole the original signer of the loans is the victim????? LOL

Without the consumer the banks would have had no derivatives to sell. It TOOK A SIGNATURE FROM AN INDIVIDUAL CITIZEN to start the ball rolling. Kids today put themselves in 20K + of debt before they are 25....with depreciating assets. Not even education debt Its a shame really. Because that money would be better spent on appreciating assets that THEN pay for the cool things.

My immigrant grandfather said to me.."You can spend your life PAYING interest on the things you desire or collecting it topay for the things you desire. Its your choice. I am glad I listened.

(He also said you can work for your dreams and hire people to help or spend your life working for someone seeking and achieving theirs....)" Took a lot longer for the last to sink in....

    Wise words.

I bought a Diesel Jetta (44 mpg) in 2006 when fuel started rising then. I then parked my 2004 Diesel Dodge 4x4 Quad Cab (17 mpg). My Dodge only has around 30,000 miles.

I really like the Jetta. Handles excellent, has an ok amount of room and I smile ear to ear when I fuel up.

When I wear out this Jetta, I hope someone will start making a cheap diesel pickup truck with good fuel economy (come on Toyota I am counting on you). Then, I will sell the Jetta and the Dodge and only have one vehicle.

Drove a deisel Jetta..Almost bought one until I saw the price tag and did the math.....With my driving the extra money verses features on a gasoline powered Accord. would not have paid for itself in fuel savings. But I did like that Turbo Diesel a lot. just preferred the Accord coupefor less money which got me 23/29 at the time. I was looking at the Jetta wagon and as equipt it was close to $30K!!! because of the diesel.

Kids will always find the "cool car" to have. In my day it was 72 442 and Chevy Malibu 3 and 427 and 318 CI Barracudas Road Runners, 402 Mustangs and Camaros.... all getting less than 10MPG lol....When gas went up kids are now buying the 4 banging fart machines that can actually outperform many of the stock the muscle cars of my day. AND get good MPG....although they sound like elephant farts....

Like you said in a way..People adjust.

I understand. I bought my Jetta new for $23k loaded. I tried to talk my wife into one also but, she wanted the Audi diesel version on the Jetta for 35k. I tried to explain that it was defeating the purpose of buying a small diesel.

the main difference between here and Europe and why high gas prices are a problem is that Americans have a longer commute mainly because our country is the size of the entire european continent, but also because the majority of our cities and towns are less dense (with few exceptions); and without adequate long range mass transit our economy relies on our cars/trucks. High gas prices with drive the economy into a much worse recession. It really tough over here on the western states where unlike the eastern seaboard cities and towns are significantly spread out.

Canada is a large country (second largest) but has the population of California and for the most part their centers of industry are dense (i.e Vancouver metro area, Toronto metro area, Calgary, etc) the real hardship for Canada is the effect on long haul truck drivers who transport their goods around but fortunately they subsidize diesel and fuel for farm equipment.

Its all relative. I'd put a lift and bumper on a full size V8 and still out perform the taco mileage-wise. Don't get me wrong, I love this truck and its size (parking, manueverability, etc.) but the economy on a smaller truck should be much better.

Yes but I would have more room, more power, and better gas mileage!

    Just look north. $1.18/liter x 3.78 = $4.46/US gallon:eek: There's a reason why the first thing you see at a US/Canada border crossing is a gas station!

A buddy of mine has a f250 ext cab 4x4 with a V8(not sure which one) and averages 18mpg. That's with a ARB style bumper and a cap (no lift). His miles are pretty much all city and mine are almost all highway. I keep the speed down to a max of 10km/h over the limit. I'm just saying for the size/weight differences between an equally equipped Tacoma and a full size, we should be getting better mileage than we are.

^^ This is about the best my F150 ever got too.

There is only one explanation for this...your friend is lying! Not trying to be an ass, but guys that have diesel F250's don't get MPGs that high. Gas engine SDs average about 11-13 mpg. Maybe your friend got the 'super-secret magical' package!
