Use what you have but only a fool doesn't use all tools they have available. Having a backup camera, and being able to use it properly, is better then not having it. Yes, being unable to go without it is also a problem, but don't conflate the issue. Ultimately you cannot see "through" the vehicle in any of the mirrors so they have large areas that you cannot observe, the backup camera HELPS fill those areas in.

Which is where my compliant with the Tacoma camera comes in. The resolution of the image is so low that you cannot quickly discern what objects are in it, I DONT want to have to stare at the camera to be able to use it, I want to glance at it when I'm using the mirrors. As it stands today the blurry garbage image takes longer to discern then a crisp clear image does, which means you have to focus on it MORE, or use it less and lose its utility.

I don't want a "4K super ultra HD HDR" image because its cool, I want a clearer image so I can glance at it with my mirrors.

A craftsman uses every tool in his toolbox to make the best possible result, its the hack that thinks he is so good he only needs the hammer.

Yes, because its not like the exact same vehicle a year prior had a better camera... but I guess saying "should have bought a 2017 instead of a 2021 if you wanted a better camera" just doesn't have the same ring to it.

going to call me poopy head next? maybe doodo face?

maybe that Mercedes has a screen to prevent bugs from getting on the radiator. Oh, that's right, the only things worth discussing on these vehicles are the ones you are doing.

I was disappointed in the quality being a new truck but then I remembered that I paid $45,000 CAD ($35,000 USD) for a fully loaded truck. Plus I do not rely on the backup camera as many seem to.

I think the complaint from most of us is not just the quality, but that the quality noticeably and significantly decreased in 2020. If the Tacoma's always came with poor cameras that would be more understandable. Granted, there are always those of us who like to tinker, and those that always like to crap on what everyone else is working on.
Although you don't see the hate towards those putting better skid plates on, or different air filters, like you see for those that want to tinker with electronics. Ultimately is looking to ways to improve the camera and different then looking at ways to say, put on a Pro Skidplate?

I get it and I am not hating. Just purely my opinion on the fact. I think with today's technology they could have done a better job. I did actually notice a slight decrease in quality of my 2020's camera compared to my 2016. Once would surmise that it should be better lol.

The quality is very disappointing. The technology to have a clearer view would not have added that much cost. It's just sad given the cost of the truck :(

The image on the backup camera on my wife's 2012 Camry is much much better than the one that my 2018 Tacoma had.

    Probably go with poopy head.

I just feel like there is a lot of complaining about a vehicle that we all chose to purchase. If you didnt like it why did you buy it?

A true Craftsman knows how to adapt the tools at hand to work for whatever task is at hand. Off-roaders have that ability too. I carry many tools (I make my living as a very specialized Electrician) a hammer is one of them; it’s well-used :D

Back to the topic at hand, if the earlier Tacos actually have a better camera, why not figure-out a way to adapt one to the newer trucks instead of whining about or complaining about it to the stateo_O? I mean the three people who are bothered by such things would probably appreciate it.

Then why can I read the small text on the cover image a band provided by apple carplay when displayed on the head unit?

And gee, its almost like we could use a discussion forum to communicate just such a project for adapting a higher quality camera, ideas, issues, technical solutions, etc. If only there was one around where folks wouldn't shit on any discussion for doing so.... Oh wait, that HAS been done, and it came about in one of these threads... Oh, and since things are different we need to further discuss the other systems across the various Tacoma's. Huh, I'm sure that was discovered by NOT having a thread about it...

Three people, yeah that's why there are a half dozen threads on it. But hey, maybe we should go shitting on all the threads about bed stiffeners because "its stiff enough" and "learn to use the tools you have", right? What? You cannot use your bed without breaking it? Maybe you should just not abuse your truck so you don't have to fix it...right? Oh wait, THOSE are justified because it matters to YOU.

Great, then you should probably delineate that you are talking of the processing happening behind the display and not the head unit (general) or display or graphics ability. Because the head unit can process images of much higher quality, and display images of much higher quality, then it does when utilizing the camera. As evident by its ability to process and display cover art. Don't blame others for using ambiguous terms, the display and HEAD UNIT can both handle high quality images.

I’ve backed up an Ariel Atom without the benefit of a camera. The thirdgen Tacoma camera is pretty good IMO.

Doh. Good catch. I am so used to typing fourthgen F-body. Thanks for keeping me honest while making me laugh.

    Do you need a tissue?

I got a lot grief for adding the brand of Bed Stiffeners I did to my Taco (All Pro, because I’ve used their products on other vehicles and like their design better than the others). Didn’t bother me then, doesn’t bother me now. Then again I’ve been around and built custom vehicles my whole life (check my album for my latest project where I swapped a modern Subaru engine into a VW Thing) so cry babies and keyboard warriors don’t bother me.

There are many more complaints on this forum for actual problems which some of these trucks have (odd-shifting transmission, leaking Timing Cover, third brake light leak) then there are about the quality of the image of the back-up Camera. Now if there was a problem with the camera actually working, well that would get my attention. Complaining because the quality is too low is just low, well Kyle & Karen, maybe you should have paid more attention during the Test Drive

My DD is an F-550 with a Service Body. No back-up camera and only side-mirrors. I back it in next to my garage every night with two feet on either side with no camera. On that rig a camera would be nice, but not a necessity.

One feature I do wish our Tacos had was the ability to switch the back-up camera to a different view when the tailgate is down. Ford’s have had that feature for years and I can see how that could be useful.

you mean that HEAD UNIT that also processes the cover art?

It’s not my fault you cannot articulate specific functions and instead use broad terms. Oh wait, apparently “it goes without saying” means whatever you need it to when called out for making meaningless ambiguous comments

it’s strange too, it’s almost like the head unit controls the display…
