Good job getting a case filed. Keep your own records as well, including who you talked to at Toyota (their names), your case number, and the topic.

RIGHT NOW I would be talking with Toyota Corporate about a free extended warranty. You took it to them for service. They're supposed to be the experts. They forgot to put oil back in your vehicle. They're responsible.

I'd want a free extended warranty (beginning at the END of the normal powertrain warranty, i.e. extended coverage STARTS after 6 years/60,000mi), and if the engine has any trouble during that coverage period, they better be crating in a new one on their dime.

You said they haven't called you back. Call them every day, send a registered letter. In other words, be a pain. The more time that passes the more credibility they have that there's nothing wrong.
Settle for nothing less than the extended warranty.

The stealership is like the ostrich. They like to ignore you put their head in the sand and hope you are gone when they take it out but you need to be there. Be a PITA with a paper trail.

Stay after them. The squeaky wheel gets the grease. Extended warranty. If Toyota is so sure there is no damage, they should have no problem putting their money where their mouth is.They don't have to fix it until when/if it self destructs. When/if it self destructs, you get your motor fixed on their dime. I think maybe they have compromised the long term reliability of your motor. You just bought a new truck and shouldn't have that sinking feeling that today could be the day every time you crank your truck. Sorry, that sounds so morbid.

I do my own oil changes, don't remember when was the last time I had a dealership do that for me. Might have been my 86 Mazda when I purchase it that year. I run Amsoil in my X.

Haveta say to correct the record...Toyota didn't to this, the dealership did. Toyota's not responsible beyond the original factory warranty. In fact I believe they are in the same boat with OP except they have a life preserver: they could void factory warranty and leave OP to sink alone if the dealership doesn't step up to their responsibility.

I was a General Manager for Pep Boys back in the 90's and we had shops that had the same thing happen and they(Pep Boys) put new engines in. It never happened at my location but the incidents were covered in meetings at corporate. They took care of the incidents quickly and took measures to try and minimize the occurances.

I agree. And when you don't get anywhere with the parts/service manager that's when you ask to speak to the General Manager. I had to do that when they screwed up my Jeep. I got results THAT day!

Smart money says there was actually a little oil left in it, maybe 1/2-1 qt or so. Apparently OP drove almost 1 km before the light went on, and then 1 km back to the dealer.

That can only happen if there is at least a little oil since, as a couple people pointed out, there's a safety that shuts the engine off after a few seconds with 0 oil pressure.

I hat to say it but in my 90 years of life, I have had engines that have delivered plenty of miles after a no oil run. I had one that had absolutely no oil in it - my bud said nice gages but I think you have a kinked oil line. We looked no kink - NO OIL!!! We filled up the oil and I sold that car after I put 100k more miles on it! :)

This is point I tried to make back in the beginning of this. A few years back I had an assembly issue on a landcruiser engine I was rebuilding. I ran it for about 10 minutes at 2500 RPM (gauge indicated good pressure) until it locked up solid. The only thing I had to replace was main bearings. Everything else spec'd out perfectly fine.

Unfortunately I did the same thing. Drove with no oil what so ever cause a road hazard took out the oil pan. Never noticed and ended up a on a freeway. Bet I drove that damn car with no oil for over 60 miles before I noticed. Even when I did notice, I didn't notice the light, the engine noise got louder then the music. I had to drive another 20km before I could get off the freeway. Least I slowed down a bit then. Truly I though the engine was done and it was not my car. The road hazard happened the day before and the oil drained out over night. Never noticed. A older car that the speedo had gone completely around two times and was reading 160,000km again. Amazingly took it in, new oil pan and there was nothing wrong with the engine. Never burned oil after that nothing. It's was a damn CHEV ! Unbelievable. What eventually killed that car was a accident when it had got to around 600,000km again. Rear ended by a POS Ford 3 ton no brakes on a hill bottom. So that's like 2,600,000 km. Pretty much all highway miles in a few short years.

Here we are talking about a new truck. I'd be so pissed off. I'd be camping out at the dealership.

The general manager finally called today and offered me a 6 year full comprehensive warranty for 160000km. I asked for a power train 8 year but he said it wasn't available any more. there is a 7 year comprehensive but he said the 6 year was all he was willing to do. I guess it's over not much more I can do because there is no evidence of damage and they are willing to give me this warranty.

I asked the dealership master technician about this safety mechanism with no oil pressure and he said the Tacoma doesn't have it. Not sure i believe him though he didn't check any manuals or anything.
