OK, now I'm stoked. Before my recent trip I built a portable shower that uses an electric pump powered off my house battery. It now has heat! Poking around for different options I came across electric immersion heating elements. Found one that was 1000W and ordered it. It arrived today and I tested it out tonight off the inverter (1200W) and house battery.

It heated 5gal water from 67F to 100F in 22min, taking battery from 79% to 41%.

This is going to be awesome! I didn't use the shower often on my trip because temps were getting frigid up in Montana and on the trip back through Dakotas, CO, and NM. I brought a solar shower along but it wasn't doing the job, could barely heat water beyond lukewarm.

nice! too bad your not swinging through the bay. At least myself are going to swing by the event at BAMF on Saturday. Not sure if anyone else is going. Naturally will have the X1 with me.

 

We were planning on coming back through the Bay area.. unfortunately we'll miss that BAMF event by a couple days. Might try and swing by still that following week, depending what day we are in the area.

 

did you consider the propane heaters?

 

this is my plan if we ever decide to go water heater.

For sure was thinking don't he way up. but if your down want to swing through. I'm off 101 20 min south of SF. grab a beer bite to eat on the way through if your up for it.

That furnace fired up gave me a chub. Hows it working? The door get hot?

 

Just got all finished with rough mounting it last night (needs more solid attachment which I'll do on Sunday), so I only really tested it for maybe 10min total but I'm stoked that it seems to work so far.

I'm going to take it out to the beach tomorrow and "work remote" to see how it holds the heat. Should be in the 40s so a decent way to see the temp difference. More to come!

Frenchie. Yep. In South Redondo near the pier. Office is on the north side of the Long Beach airport.

 

Thought about one. But I didn't really want to deal with a propane tank which is what I'd end up carting around. I'll give this a try for now. If it doesn't work, can always go propane later.

 

So the 1/2” tall bars won't clear anywhere except the very back of the cab, behind the shark fin. This would really only stiffen up the short section after the rear mounts.. which.. doesn't really matter. I was more interested in making the middle of the rack more rigid again so I could use it for lashing points/grab points. Oh well..




Mounting the crossbar just under flush like the factory ones are.. leaves the below amount of gap between roof.

 

Just FYI if anyone cares. I asked josh for an update and he replied quickly that they are trying to bring on more staff etc and my new possible instal date is Jan 20-28 from the original thanksgiving time frame. He seemed confident.

 

wow I knew i would be close but that's not leaving much left. You can still use the sides to mount grab pretty easily and the X1 covers most of it so mainly i have it for routing, hiding wire not much else at the moment. At first, I forgot to add the cross bars but now not sure it would have mattered all that much. I would like to add one on the rear as that's the part that seems not as solid where you have it. I have no shark fit so a it more flexibility but your spot seems sound.

 

For sure. Not the end of the world, and I probably will forget all about it after the camper goes on. I'd like to get that rear one in there.. but I think I can access it all after the fact.. so no rush.

 

Same sentiments on my end just haven’t got to it.

 

This is the idea of a front stop that tucks up under the overhanging lip of the X1 at the front bed rail. 1/2" square stock and 1/8" x 2" flat. Each piece is 36" long. Connected to the T-rail with T-bolts and 3/8" hex bolts. there is a very slight (~1/16") gap between the stop and overhanging lip (2nd photo red line). I'm going to glue a piece of hard rubber on this.



If your X1 is already installed the gap may be different than mine, a bit wider than 5/8". But I believe this stop coupled with the SP clamps and the aluminum clamp (see photo below) I showed before will mitigate movement, IMHO. There's too many connection points.
