That custom have the baseball bat neck or something slimmer? I remember hearing that some of the 80s Gibsons were hit or miss because there was a different parent company. Also the 80s customs are the only ones i ever really liked, hahaha.

It's rounded but it's no baseball bat. Definitely not a slim neck. I like the rounded necks but not baseball bats. That's what I love most about the 50s standards.

All my rigs are purpose built. From crawling to camping. I also enjoy a nice stock truck for what that’s worth. Toyota’s are the jam!
Yep, the lead in our band ripped the shit out of one. His was blacked out of course and so was he lol! Dude looked like a monster version of jim Morrison, with blacked out glasses you got when your eyes were dilated. Lol
Holy f’ the old days were so much fun!

I pounded the drums like they owed me money!!!

Anyone use Gotoh locking tuning machines? Probably going to get a set to match the bride and tailpiece on a build I'm getting ready to start. I have no experience with locking tuners, but they look pretty handy.

I had a set of gotoh’s on a guitar - they’re nice but most nice locking tuners these days all get the job done. Keeps things tidy with no winds, but honestly I’ve never had that much trouble with any regular or locking tuners as long as the nut isn’t pinching the strings.

    What are your practice methods?

I’m sure they vary depending on your skill level. Maybe my question should have been, “What should be my guitar practice methods?”.

I own a Jackson electric guitar but apart from practicing the basic pentatonic scale from E to E, and going through some power chords, I don’t know much.

I’ve decided I would really like to apply the melodies in my head to the guitar in my hands. I often pick it up and want to do so much more but, I’m very limited because I’m a beginner. I just have this feeling inside when the guitar is in my hands...it feels so natural and all these ideas & melodies come into my mind. I get frustrated because I don’t yet possess the skills to transfer what’s in my head to the guitar. Maybe some of you can relate?

    Any suggestions or tips?

basic technique things: keep up on hammer-ons and pull-offs, picking patterns, and chord shapes
chromatic scale runs: keep all fingers warmed up, especially the damn pinky. mix in string skipping to keep things fresh/ challenging

picking a passage in a song and trying to learn it by ear. this will help you somewhat identify what's in your head and be able to pull it out of your guitar. a good thing for this is playing any scale and singing/ humming the notes as you go. you'll start to recognize pitches and be able to more easily translate in your head.

My brother’s first guitar was a faded cherry SG with moon inlays. My first guitar was a seafoam Jay Turser SG with a bigsby. Never figured out how guys could play so well on those.

What you are talking about is developing your ear. I have a couple suggestions for this-

    1) Practice pentatonic and eventually diatonic scales on one string at a time, by sound. You need to learn to recognize intervals by ear.

    2) Whether you learned scales by the CAGED method or 3 note per string (this is what I did), start playing without those familiar patterns and instead look for the sound you want. Try to notice your comfort zones on the neck and make a conscious effort to break out of them. If you play with a single note drone track, you can do this in major, then minor, then the rest of the modes and learn how they sound differently and what they evoke in you. This goes back to ear-interval training and also to learning how to be expressive through an instrument.

    3) Listen to, figure out and play along with pop songs. You will learn to identify mostly major and minor sounds and how they are used together to create different feelings.

    4) Play everything you hear. Car horns, the Nokia jingle, Happy Birthday...everything, both within a 3 note per sting box and on a single string. I was really surprised when I figured out happy birthday from memory. There are some very large intervals. It might take an hour to get it just right, but if you learn to transpose these well known sounds to your guitar, you are starting to speak the language.

It takes a lot of time (I'm still in the thick of it), but if you keep at it you will look back in a year and not believe how far you have come. I think it is very difficult and there is no such thing as a natural player. It does take a lot of discipline and structured practice.

Thank you, this advice is very helpful. I know I have a very long road ahead of me but, the musical passion is inside me and I just need to learn how to apply it to the instrument.

I've had a les paul and a jackson dinky and then some obscure brand ones of different body and neck styles. My SG has been my favourite so far.. I don't know what to tell ya. Personal preference, each their own? ;p

I give credit to their ability when Iommi, Young, and Betts play amazingly well on them. The one I almost bought was a Voodoo that looked awesome and I really wanted it, but it felt neck heavy and the neck had a lot of open pores (by design) that I remember made me feel “this would be like playing a broom stick.” I liked my brother’s og faded. I imagine having a finished neck would change things too.

I think I figured out what that horrible buzzing is coming out of my amp. I suspect interference from the lights from my next door neighbors grow operation.

Need one of those surge protectors that condition you power. They help. If you got a tube amp your cell phone can mess with your amp too. If I set my phone on my amp, all sorts of funny noises come through when the cell is talking to the network.
