RADAR CHECK: A band of showers has pushed into Northwest Alabama early this morning ahead of a cold front that will bring a significant weather change today. Look for occasional showers, and temperatures going the wrong way. We are starting the day around 60 degrees ahead of the cold front, but after it passes temperatures fall into the 40s with a chilly north wind. The front should reach I-59 (Tuscaloosa/Birmingham/Gadsden) by noon, and Montgomery by late afternoon. Rain amounts today should be under 1/2 inch, and the sky will clear from northwest to southeast late in the day.

Tonight will be clear and cold… many places will be at or just below freezing early tomorrow morning.

TOMORROW AND THE WEEKEND: Look for a sunny sky tomorrow with a high in the upper 50s… Saturday will be another sunny day with a high in the mid 60s. The day Sunday will be dry; with a partly sunny sky temperatures will rise into the 65-68 degree range. Clouds increase late in the day, and rain will likely push into the state Sunday night ahead of another cold front.

THANKSGIVING WEEK: Rain will end early in the day Monday, followed by a clearing sky. The day will be considerably colder with a high around 50 degrees. Tuesday morning will be the coldest so far this season as most communities will drop well down in the 20s. Sunny and cool weather is the story for Tuesday and Wednesday with highs in the 50s.

A disturbance has the potential to bring some light rain to the northern third of Alabama Thanksgiving day, but the rest of the state will be cool and dry with a high around 60 degrees. Rain will be more likely statewide Friday… See the Weather Xtreme video for maps, graphics, and more details.

LUNAR ECLIPSE LATE TONIGHT: We will be able to see a “near-total” lunar eclipse after midnight tonight. 99.1% of the Moon will be in Earth’s shadow at maximum eclipse at 3:03 am CT… the sky will be clear over Alabama. While the statement “longest partial eclipse of the decade” is technically true, it is not that significant. Next year’s total lunar eclipse on May 16 total (visible from Americas, western Africa & Europe) will be one minute shorter.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: For the high school games tomorrow night, the sky will be clear with temperatures falling through the 40s, possibly reaching the upper 30s by the final whistle.

    For the college games Saturday…

HUNTINGDON AT BIRMINGHAM SOUTHERN (12:00p CT kickoff at General Krulak Stadium): A sunny day for football with temperatures in the 60-65 degree range.

FURMAN AT SAMFORD (12:00p CT kickoff at Seibert Stadium): The sky will be sunny with temperatures in the low to mid 60s.

NORTH ALABAMA AT HAMPTON (12:00p CT kickoff at Hampton, VA): The sky will be sunny with temperatures in the 50-55 degree range during the game.

JACKSONVILLE STATE AT EASTERN KENTUCKY (1:00p CT kickoff in Richmond, KY): The sky will be partly sunny; kickoff temperature near 52 degrees, holding in the low to mid 50s during the game.

ARKANSAS AT ALABAMA (2:30p CT kickoff at Bryant-Denny Stadium): It will be a sunny afternoon with a kickoff temperature around 65 degrees… falling into the 50s by the fourth quarter.

UAB AT USTA (2:30p CT kickoff in San Antonio, TX): This game will be played inside the Alamodome. Outside, the sky will partly sunny with afternoon temperatures in the low to mid 70s.

APPALACHIAN STATE AT TROY (2:30p CT kickoff at Veterans Memorial Stadium): The sky will be sunny; about 68 degrees at kickoff, falling to near 60 by the final whistle.

AUBURN AT SOUTH CAROLINA (6:00p CT kickoff in Columbia, SC): The weather will be clear and cool; temperatures will fall from near 52 at kickoff, to near 45 by the final whistle.

SOUTH ALABAMA AT TENNESSEE (6:30p CT kickoff in Knoxville, TN): The sky becomes mostly cloudy with temperatures falling through the 40s. No risk of rain.

ON THIS DATE IN 1957: An F2 tornado moved through the western and northern part of the Birmingham metro. After touching down in Ensley, the tornado moved northeast through the Pratt area and North Birmingham and eventually into Tarrant. Many homes between 22nd and 24th streets on 35th and 36th Avenues North were damaged with numerous large trees down around the area. The Birmingham Airport reported winds of 69 mph and sited the funnel just to the northwest. Damage in Tarrant was mainly to the industrial area

I don't really care about some issues and I am not going to argue with people about their opinions on them, even though I do like to debate issues as the devil's advocate. I make fun of some of the stupid things that go around and I do it about all parties involved. A lot of people just need to grow up, if they can't talk about any issues and accept that people have different views and opinions than they do then they are the problem.

Do it. Y’all can have whatever you want to cut down. Been talking to foresters about who would be interested. Timber guys want to clear cut the whole thing. Sawmills might be interested, but I’m still digging. I don’t have the time to be Paul Bunyan anymore and I don’t want them to go to waste.

He heats his house with wood so oak and other less sappy woods would be best.
Are there any good standing dead hardwoods? If you got some locust, maple, cedars and such I'd definitely be interested for turning and taking to the mill around the corner from me to process.

Sawmills are always interested it's just finding the guys willing to selectively harvest to take to the mills.

Not a lot of other hardwoods. Most of our land is oak, maybe 25% pine.

COLD, DRY MORNING: Temperatures are mostly in the 27-35 degree range across Alabama early this morning; a very dry airmass covers the Deep South and we expect sunshine in full supply today with a high around 60 degrees. Tonight will be clear and cold again, and the low early tomorrow will be in the low 30s for most communities.

The sky will stay sunny tomorrow with a high in the mid 60s. The day Sunday will be dry… with a partly sunny sky temperatures reach the mid to upper 60s Sunday afternoon. Clouds will increase late in the day ahead of a cold front that will bring rain back to the state late Sunday night and early Monday. For now it looks like the main window for rain comes from about 9:00 p.m. Sunday through 6:00 a.m. Monday. Amounts should be 1/2 inch or less.

THANKSGIVING WEEK: The sky will clear during the day Monday, and the weather will be breezy and colder with a high around 50 degrees. Tuesday morning will feature lows in the mid 20s… it should be the coldest morning so far this season. Then, dry weather continues for the rest of the week. The high Tuesday will be in the low 50s, followed by upper 50s Wednesday, and low 60s Thursday and Friday.

IRON BOWL SATURDAY: It is simply too early to call the weather for Saturday November 27. The American GFS model suggests a cool, dry day, but the European global model (ECMWF) shows widespread rain. We will have much better clarity early next week.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: For the high school games tonight, the sky will be clear with temperatures falling through the 40s, possibly reaching the upper 30s by the final whistle.

    For the college games tomorrow…

ON THIS DATE IN 1930: An estimated F4 tornado struck the town of Bethany, Oklahoma. Between 9:30 am and 9:58 am CST, it moved north-northeast from 3 miles west of the Oklahoma City limits, and hit the eastern part of Bethany. About 110 homes and 700 other buildings, or about a fourth of the town, were damaged or destroyed. Near the end of the damage path, 3.5 miles northeast of Wiley Post Airfield, the tornado hit the Camel Creek School. Buildings blew apart just as the students were falling to the floor and looking for shelter, and five students and a teacher were killed. A total of 23 people were killed.
