Back to the slider grind. One of the few without kick outs

Newbie question -- I've been practicing on 1/8" scraps -- Using an angle grinder to cut them into smaller pieces and mig welding them together. Trying to put in the hours to get comfortable. I stumbled upon some 1/4" square tube and a few other 1/4" scraps. The grinder works great for the 1/8" and *I think* it works fine for the 1/4" but it does take a really long time. Slow and steady. My basic questions -- assume you want to make a 6" cut across a 1/4" sheet -- how long should this take using the 4 1/2" angle grinder? 3 minutes? 20 minutes? Should I be thinking sawzall at this point or is the grinder the way to go (no I don't have and won't be getting plasma anytime soon). thanks in advance!

It cracks me up how hard it is to pull a straight line -- and the respect I have for viewing a good weld skyrockets by the day lol. Hopefully there are a few good lines in the pic below and you could pick out where I started and ended ...

Cutting with an angle grinder is the most expensive way to cut, its also the most dirty. Your whole garage will be full of dust soon.

With that said, I will never be without a portable band saw. I have a plasma cutter but I use the bandsaw 95% of the time for my cutting.

Keep the pics coming. I'll try to comment later. About to head out the door.

Agreed. Might be hard to make a 6" cut on 1/4" sheet with a porta band though.

Not all 4 1/2" grinders are created equal nor are the cutting discs .

Cutting mild steel plate 1/4" plate letting the disc do the work 3 to 5 minutes sounds about right .

I let the disc do the work so I get quite a few cuts out of a disc.

The grinder with a cutting disc is my go to for making one or two cuts it is just faster to me. Even having the Plasma , The oxy- fuel torch and the Horizontal band saw within a few steps

I don`t think I used my Porta band since I pulled it off the truck

If you cut from both sides with a deep cut porta band it can be done.

Like when the truck is two floors away I can make the cut in the time I could get the torch up stairs.

Something not slider related that I just whipped up

Needed to throw together a surfboard rack to utilize the height of my shed and get my boards out of the corner and free up more floor space

Well, not my best work, and didn’t get to finish today. I recently got the Titanium Plasma and this was my first real project with it, trying to cut a straight line on a curved plow disc with no guide was interesting. Trying to cut a round hole for the base of the smoke stack was even harder, I had to fill in a couple large holes. But it is definitely a fun little project. Please critique and offer any suggestions, I know I was going to slow with the plasma, will work on that when I finish the cuts!

How many amps is your grinder? I have an 11 amp Milwaukee and that thing rips. That cut wouldn’t take me more than a minute but I have never actually timed it. If I have time this morning, I will make a cut and a Timelapse and throw it in here for the name of science.

So I started cutting at 12 seconds on the stopwatch, so actual cut time was 32 seconds.

I know this isn’t ideal for longevity of the disc but my time is worth more than a few cutting discs.

Awesome reference. Thanks! My grinder is also 11 amps. I’ll try another cut tomorrow when I’m home. I think I was letting the wheel ‘do the work’ a tad more than necessary and seemed like it would take forever. I figured I was going too slow, esp relative to the 1/8” cuts I’ve been making but wanted to confirm. THANKS!

I use the benchmark abrasives cutting discs that come in a 50 pack for like $25, so the discs are pretty cheap. That’s why I force the disc on through since it’s worth the time savings to me.

Just keep in mind if the disc catches they will explode and pieces tend to fly

Hey guys. Me again. Still building submarines in Virginia but finally got into a rent house with a garage. Anyone have recommendations on a 110v tig only welder? I know buy once cry once and all that but in a couple years I’ll be building a shop back home in Texas and will use 240v for everything. So it doesn’t have to be the best on earth but preferably not junk either

Do you need AC or is DC only going to work??

    Most are 120/240 VAC

Your not going to have much output .

It looks like Harbor Freight has the best Warranty!

Just what are you trying to do it is easy to go from low output no bells and whistles to Industrial Tig machine not so much the other way lots of frustration.
