    Hey guys,

I know some of you are hardcore photographers...lol...

I need some advice. I have a son on the way...Expected to arrive somewhere around the end of January.

Lookin for a decent digital camera to take baby pictures with.

I know i want one with a nice shutter speed or shutter lag i should say...

Any of you guys have any advice? I was looking at the canon a590 or the canon 110 with the 10x optical zoom...

    Price range...150 - 250...

    Thanks

Is that the most you are willing to spend?

IMHO, I'd recomend throwing a bit more money at a Canon Digital-SLR. A digital Rebel will last your family YEARS, and more than likely your son will be able to use it when hes old enough. Very rugged camera.

Mines been dropped so many times, and has bounced all around my truck on many occasions. Certainly the best "bang for your buck", in my opinion.

I just like to think of myself a photographer...

Im really not that good at it...and the idea of a DSLR kinda scares me...Dont they have all manual settings and all kinds of different things i can mess up...

I have a panasonic fz8 right now...and i just cant seem to get the settings right on it...my pictures always end up out of focus, or too bright, or too dark...i just cant seem to get it right...So i was looking a camera that i could just point and shoot untill i got used to it...and then have the option to change some settings as i felt more comfortable...

Unless you guys have a better way to get my foot in the door of the photography world...

Just because it has alot of setting (the Rebel is fairly basic), doesn't mean you have to use them...

Agreed, we have the Nikon D40 and most of the time we just leave it on "auto" and it takes fantastic pictures. Defiantly worth the money if you can afford it. They are only baby's once...

This is just something that I tell people to think about when they are looking for cameras. Those big cameras take awsome pictures and don't get me wrong I like them. But they are big!! Especialy when you buy a case that holdes the camera and maybe a different lense and all that crazy stuff. Sometimes I wish I had one of those small allmost credit sized cameras instead. If I'm walking around a car show or a motor cycle even't or just hanging around with friends and family I don't want to lug that thing around! My suggestion if money is a factor get one of those digital cameras that are like a step below the DSLR's so you can save a couple bucks and get one of those small/slim cameras that you can throw in your wifes purse and have with you at all times. Just my 2 cents I don't want to start anything negative.

Good point...Im good at photoshop...And i have that program on my home pc...So thats not a problem...I just wanted everyone's opinion on a decent point and shoot camera...

Looks like everyone here had DSLR's though...

I guess if i buy a P&S camera and i dont like it, i can always take it back and upgrade to a DSLR...

I was just researching the D40 and it looks like a very good buy. The draw to that camera is that it takes almost instant pictures. I've got many nephews and I know how hard it has been to get good pictures of them because of the shutter lag.

I'd look into doing the eBay thing with the Live 30% Cashback deal. You should be able to get a camera shipped to you for about $280 (normally $400)

This is the info for the Live 30% cashback thing. http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/deals-coupons/18321-save-ton-ebay.html For more information, you need to go to www.live.com and search there.

    Removed front mud flaps.
+1 for the D40. Bought mine 4 years ago just after my son was born. One filled 80gb hard drive later and it's still one of my best purchases. Look at Ritz Camera or B&H.

Actually, looks like the D60 is cheaper than the D40 right now at that B&H link I gave. You'll use the 18-55mm lens most but that 55-200 zoom lens will take some great pics of your rig without having to get under it!

Also, A_Ninja_Racer's comment on getting a small one to carry around is a good point, there have been plenty of times when I just didn't feel like hauling the D40 around. But I'm always happy I did when I get home and download the images to my PC.

I have the Olympus Stylus 770 7.1 MP underwater. Takes great pics out of the water also. Shockproof, waterproof, freezeproof. Awesome camera!

    http://www.olympusamerica.com/cpg_section/cpg_digital_sw.asp

I bought it when we went to Key West a few years ago. It has been a great camera. One of the great features is shockproof. If you drop it & you will, it doesn't break. Unlike most other digital cameras. I paid just under $300 for mine a few years ago. All my pics in my gallery, were taken with this camera.

I have an older Olympus FE-110 and a Nikon D40 DSLR and love them both, i got the D40 dirt cheap because when i went to the vigin islands with my family they had them for sale for nearly half the price the ones sold in the USA!!

I just bought the Nikon D80 and love it! Its more for the wife but i've been playing with it and it takes great pictures. I'm not a professional photographer but we will be taking the classes to get more familiar with the camera. My thing is, i would rather spend a little more and get more camera then spend less on a camera and a year later be wishing i would have spent more. Its better to have more then not enough...IMHO

if you choose a point and shoot or a dslr, just buy a Nikon heads and shoulders above the rest. BTW I love my D80. Like previously think about size my D80 is a big camera also that baby could grab the camera in a couple of months and pull it off a table also think about that. Nikon though!
