Not nearly has hard as you might think. Pull seats. Pull trim panels as needed. Pull center console. Replace carpet. Reinstall parts. Of course this is the simple version. But really it’s not that bad.

Is there any kind of adhesive or anything that goes under it or do the bolts just hold the carpet in place?

Correct. No adhesive. The seats and trim are what hold it in place.

I did my 2011 X a few years back. I went with ACC and got the additional backing. If I had to do it over I would just pay a ton extra and get it direct from Toyota. I spent days trimming, cutting and steaming. The additional backing made it almost impossible to steam and fit into the contours. The most annoying thing is how far off the heel pad is. Just like every mod, I know all the imperfections so I’m the only one it bothers.

Do I even need the backing or could I just use the old one?

I did it on my 2011. It took about 6 hours but nothing too crazy. Its not glued in, they come pre molded to shape and it settles right in. You need to trim for things like the center console and wires that come through the floor. There is plenty of excess carpet. I did a pretty professional looking install but if you’re not handy then you can screw it up.

Did you buy backing too or just the carpet?

The one I bought it comes on the carpet. I chose the thicker backing. I used OC auto carpets and it’s been nice.

What would you like to know? I've done it a few times before finally just tossing the carpet all together and putting in an all weather liner instead

What all weather liner did you use? I was looking at a vinyl molded flooring and wondered what other have used instead.
