    Hello all,
I own a 2019 2.7 Tacoma and was wondering how accurate or inaccurate the miles per gallon readout is. This reading is from 60-70 miles after fill up. Mix of highway and neighborhood driving..

    Thanks,20211121_214724.jpg

I record all my fill-ups on Fuelly, which gives me a calculated MPG for each fill-up. It's usually within ±0.5 of what the onboard computer said.
The calculated number is usually lower by a few tenths, but it's been higher a couple times.

When you fill up again hand calculate to see if it matches, the one in my truck is extremely accurate for the tankful.

I average a mpg better than that doing the same type driving with my v6 auto 2020 tacoma. I've done the math several times vs the trucks dash, and its very close between the two.

the gauge is NOT as accurate as the tried & true method of actual miles run divided by actual gallons pumped !!

it is a valuable tool to avoid being in UNfamiliar environs to avoid running Completely OUT of Fuel

if crossing death valley the gauge will allow that in ALL probablity U might NOT have enuf to make it

    to the END !!!

the ECU does average out Ur driving habits ....................

Mine is accurate, but the only way for you to know is do the math on your truck after filling.

Maybe not as super accurate as doing the actual math, but mine is always within a few tenths.

Mine has been off about .2 mpg when I’ve checked it. The display is usually optimistic by a small amount.

Fuelly usually calculates 0.3 - 0.5 MPG less than why my truck's readout is. That difference has been consistent since I started tracking with Fuelly. Close enough for government work.

Only aesthetic mods so far Leer 180 cap & Clazzio covers on order.
For overall Per Tank mileage I find it to be about ±0.2 from my calculated mileage.
Instantaneous MPG as you drive just gives you a feel for how your driving affects MPG. Other than that, it's pretty much worthless with respect to what really matters - your overall per tank mileage.

Its pretty close over a tank full. Wait till your Taco breaks in. It gets awesome mileage. Who need electric? :bananadance::boink:

So how exactly do you use the “tried and true” method BEFORE you fill up so that you don’t run out of fuel?

Fwiw calculating your mpg at full up IS averaging out your driving habits. The instant is that, instant, or the calculation of injector on time, fuel rate, and speed. The average fuel economy is a short term average of the instant.

Only if they do it by hand and factor the % of changed miles driven.

Ziggy says 99.8% do not, and predicts the 'you bought a truck dont worry about it or buy a Prius' crowd to be along soon.

If the number you get is anywhere near 1 mpg that is close enough. And in my experience most of them will be within 1/2 mpg. Think about it, 1/2 to 1 mpg worse fuel mileage means you'll have to fill up 5-10 miles sooner unless you're one of those who drive until you only have 1/2 gallon left in the tank. If you're one of those guys you can drive 10-20 miles farther on a tank. Calculating for larger tires usually adds 1/2 mpg or less so I don't even worry about that anymore.

I have a 5 gallon semi-clear container I use or my dirt bike. I've found that pumps can be very inaccurate. I know the markings on the container are accurate. But 4 gallons can read on the pump as 4.1, 4.3 etc. Varies pump to pump. Easily can be off 5% or more.
