While that will likely be an improvement, I’ve found oem led headlight housings are superior and for $50,000 for a midsize truck I would expect them to be standard in 2022.

my 2020 Tundra, while mostly a dinosaur by technology standards, has great led headlights and fog lights. I’m pretty sure even a Toyota Corolla from years ago has LED headlights.

Interesting. For some reason I was thinking Lunar Rock had clear coat. That’s a bit concerning to me, as the super white horror stories kept me from considering white at all.

I really don't think that the single stage paint is bad at all. I'm on my third Super White Taco, 2016, 2018, and now a 2021 and have never had any problem with the paint at all. In fact the paint is always bright and looks clean all the time. Personally I think its one of the best looking colors on Tacos.

There is conflicting opinions on whether it does or does not. I’m not so sure it is a single stage paint or not.

Thanks for the response! I’m assuming that a body shop did the paint work? I wonder if I gave the paint code to any body shop they could just tell me whether it needs to be clear coated or it’s a single stage.

I’m honestly on the fence about trading. I’m on my second MGM and it has less than 1k miles on it but it’s having some QC issues that I don’t feel like fighting Toyota to warranty and it would cost me around $450 to trade for a lunar rock

$450 total? Seems like a no brainer to me

yeah it’s honestly super tempting. Both trucks have the rare combo of the MT with the advanced tech package. I just happened to see the LR being delivered next week and called the dealer just to see what it would cost to trade and fully expected to have to shell out 3k+ to switch

Miraculously the spots faded and disappeared on their own (I'm guessing from UV light expose) so fortunately I never had to break factory paint. I'm just keeping my fingers crossed that there are not issues in the future. But back your question, I would suggest contacting a dealership collision shop. I'm sure they could get to the bottom of this for you. One of the managers who inspected my truck initially said that lunar rock is "not an issue" and they've been "spraying it in house for years". I didn't ask for any clarification but I assume because lunar rock has been on the Rav4 for several years now.

I would be more worried that I could find another MT with a tech package available anytime soon if you end up passing on this one!:D

To my untrained eyes LR has a clear coat and I haven't seen anyone that's mentioned they polished it mentioning paint transfer to their pads.

It's likely a single stage like SW where the clear is mixed into the paint, I've had a few SW's and paint never transferred to polishing pads.

Can someone explain the statement “clear mixed into the paint” vs enamel paint? How the heck is clear mixed in with the paint? Wouldn’t that just be a single stage enamel paint like in the olden days?

Don't know the specific process but I know SW is single-stage and this is how it was explained to me in layman's terms.

My understanding it that all the non-sparkly modern paints which have become increasingly popular with water based paint is called "Non-Metallic Solid"

Again, my understanding is that it still has a base coat (non-metallic) and a clear coat, but it's better than traditional base-coat/clear coat metallic because it's stronger and easier to match, but harder to lay perfectly - more prone to orange-peel, etc. because their aren't any sparklies to hide imperfections.

That sounds right to me. It has a clear coat for sure but it’s non metallic. I think the old dull single stage paints were not water based as well but more durable in terms of rock chips. Also, plenty of metallic paints have orange peel, look at any Audi :frusty:

If you compound OR polish and you have no color transfer to the pad it’s not a single stage paint job.
