Forget the markup. How the hell does a RAV4 cost $50K to begin with?

 

FWIW that's the Prime, which is the plug in hybrid with a ~40 mile EV range. The XSE trim is as high as it gets. That puts it about $10k over the other trims from the start. The dealer markup is due to artificial supply shortages created by Toyota when they announced they would only be selling 5,000 of them. It's a damn nice vehicle, one that I was considering to replace my Volt....until they announced pricing.

Toyota did say they would scale back a lot of models to keep chips and such for the trucks (high profits, garunteed sales, image etc) so there is that.

 

Does my Spanish tile roof count as living under a rock? Again, artificial shortage to begin with. They publicized 5k units for the North American market, then magically they have 20k on hand? Production of this new plug in model started June of 2020, well before widespread material shortages were happening. Their marketing teams & supply chains were already going full stride well before the world came to a stop. I think they just got lucky that all of this bled right into legitimate supply issues. Either way, demand was piqued & transaction prices inflated.

I believe they are confirmed capitalists and are striving to produce every unit they can. That does not preclude them taking advantage while they can.

Ok it's a 4dr, it's AWD, it has an automatic transmission, it's a plug in hybrid. The RAV4 is a nice vehicle. They weren't bad cars in 1997, and only retailed for a little over $15,000. I can't recall but there may have been a mark up on them in the late 90's. I think they were in demand back then.
