    Hey fellas,
What’s a good fit & brand for my 2008 x-runner 4.0l I’m planning on purchasing 220a or 300a high output alternator? Any info and tips would be hella great full. I’m trying to do this the correct way before installing aftermarket sounds system. 88678903-D65A-4FDB-839D-A06D17F54070.jpg Oh yeah and also that wouldn’t kill my bank account. Thanks

There’s something called the big three, a wiring upgrade which, I think adds an additional battery under the hood.

You could also upgrade to good agm batteries, not optima. Then there’s a mod to up the charging voltage for agm batteries.

Tacoma’s came with 2 different alternators, tow package has a higher amperage. I’ve never researched what came with the x or the difference.

You could also browse through the audio visual section. The 4wd guys have done things to power winch, refrigerator and such.

I have a Mechman 240A, Northstar 27f AGM battery, and the mentioned “Big 3” wiring done. Alternator to battery +, engine to ground “-“, and body to ground “-“, all with 1/0 wire. As for alternator, I did my research on brands, and Mechman and DC Power had the rep for being reliable. Brands like PowerBastards are cheaper, but from my research last a couple or 3 years, then die. Mechman has an under drive pulley on it as well, which means an 82” belt, instead of the stock 84”.

So if I got a 240A mechman alt & the big 3 would this be ok if I ran with just doing that? My total amp watt adds up to 2000watts

So if I got a 240A mechman alt & the big 3 would this be ok if I ran with just doing that? My amp total watt will be around 1500. I just want to make sure I’ve got enough power to run everything sounds, a/c etc… and not feel a loss of power while driving.

It might. Easiest way to figure out what you need, add all of the fuse sizes on all the amps together, that will be maximum power draw of the amps. Then, add 70amps for power draw from the truck, that’s total current draw max. Not really recommended to go too far below that total for alternator output, maybe 30-40amps. For example, my sub amp is 100amps, mids and highs amp 60amps. Stock alt for my truck is 90amps. Total is 250, so a 240amp alt is just fine. Add a big AGM battery and I’m good to go.
