Gritto Foiled By A Twig...Butt Gets Another Chance

Anybody ever have a bullet deflected by brush?

One time I was still hunting on the ground, sneaking through some medium thick stuff.
I spot a buck at 50 yards, max, and he doesn't see me.
Had him dead to rights.
He was standing broadside to me at a slight angle, head down.
I fire and he leaps in the air, kicking out with his hind legs, and hauls ass.
No evidence of blood to be found.

Precisely one week later and two miles away I dropped a buck that looked exactly like the one I had "missed".
He had a long, deep, ugly, pus filled gash on the underside of his neck...just starting to scab over.
Same buck?
It sure looked like he was.
