There are plenty of other options in the 255/75/17 size that are not E load rated. You can find a better tire with a better price tag. My experience with Michelin was not what I had hoped based on their reputation.

Update: installed 1.25” spidertrax spacers onto my stock 2020 TRD OR wheels to effectively get to -6 offset and the 255/85/16 Geos rub on the fender pretty good during bumps even with 2” lift and UCAs, it’s because of the backspacing of the stock wheel. We trimmed and used a torch to bend it back a bit. Will definitely still rub at stuff and turn. We are going wheeling in about an hour, I’ll report back with whatever issues we run into. I don’t think I’ll hit the cab mount during full stuff and lock, but not 100% sure until I try. Have a good Saturday errbody

Shake down complete, only rubbing on full stuff at full lock in reverse so I'm not even going to do the CMC. Here's a baby flex, didn't take many pictures

[EDIT] see post #4650 below, 112 load rating will be fine because I will just borrow an F-150 if I want to tow a car carrier. The "drive axle" weight reported by the CAT scale includes the trailer axles because the scale is designed for 18 wheelers.

I was hoping to get a P-rated tire in the 40 lb range for city fuel efficiency. But now I think I am forced into an LT tire, because these are the axle weights reported by the CAT scale, *before I installed the fibreglass cap*:

steer axle: 2700 kg (2980 lb per tire assuming 50/50 left/right - I have an AGM battery which means the driver's side is likely in the 3020 lb range)
drive axle: 2260 kg (2490 lb plus the cap will be in the 2590 lb range, before the tongue weight of any trailer and the stuff that will 100% be in the bed all the time)

The Defender, and most other P-type tires, cap out at 2469 lb (load index 112).

Absolute minimum load index I could run without exceeding max. load spec, is 115 (2679 lb). I would not be able to tow anything.

    Thoughts?

I'm fairly new here, but are you sure those measurements are in kg? 4960kg is almost 11,000lbs!!!

If those axle weights are in lbs, then it would make more sense and you can run the non LT tire.

    Ha ha, :anonymous::anonymous::

Those are the axle weights when I was towing a 20 foot steel car carrier with a 3100 lb jeep on it! That is the most weight that truck will ever see! I will just borrow my friend's F-150 (in the background) if I do that again!

That'll do it! 5000kg makes more sense now that the trailer weight is included.

My guess is that the steer axle weight from the scale is your truck and the drive axle weight is the trailer. Seems about in the ballpark:

    • 5952lbs for entire truck with hitch weight
    • 4982lbs for trailer and 3100lb jeep

Even with the P-rated tires you can probably tow again if that's the case.

I hear you but knocking 52 lb off unsprung, rotating mass is going to show up at the pump and make the vehicle handle better. P-rated tires will be way quieter on the highway. I don't need to impress anyone anymore, already have a wife and a mistress. I have 3 of the pictured jeeps for the "roads" (ha ha) north of Algonquin park.

Looking at the Kenda Klever in 33x10.50r17, had a 255/80r17 KM2 years ago then went to a 285 Falken and looking to go back skinny. Anyone that can compare the Kenda to the old km2's? And has anyone seen or know any retailers that sell the Kenda that have black Friday deals? I usually buy from Discount this time of year but they don't carry them.

cant compare to either of your previous tires but I have the kendas on my truck and have since end of summer. Wheeled with them 2x and they gripped for days. road noise is quieter than I expected. I bought mine from walmart and had them shipped. they were on my doorstep in 2 days. Not sure if they are having any tire deals for black friday or not but I have liked the tire so far.

Alrighty- I've been slacking. Here's photos of the new setup!

These wheels are 16x7 +25 (similar to stock OR wheels) but i'm running a 1.25" spacer all around, making the effective offset -7mm. Similar to previous posts, Yoko Geo G003 255/85r16. Stock ride height. It rubs. These tires are pretty tall but share nearly identical treadwidth to my original Nitto Terra Grappler 265/70r17.

Rubbed on the edge of the over fender plastic at the fender base so I trimmed it off. Extremely close to cab mount but I can probably fix that with a little caster adjustment. Rubs in front just barely on the fender liner, and under large bumps I'm getting some contact on the fender liner near the pinch weld.. I think if I pulled the wheels in about 10mm I'd fair a little better but I like how it looks so I plan to mold the fender liner and go from there. No off road yet until the trimming/molding happens.

^Those wheels are absolutely BEAUTIFUL! Did you do a full refinish on them?

Thank you! Partial refinish only. The faces are pretty rough but i cleaned them and did a good ceramic coat to bring back the finish a little. Lots of small imperfections but I figure they'll be used offroad so scratches are inevitable. The lips were only removed and given a solid polish! They were extremely rough when I imported them from Japan and I'm surprised at how well they came out.

For anyone interested, they're Rays Power Volk's two-piece wheels, circa 1997!

Wow, they look much cleaner than you explained. I guess everything looks better in pics though :) I've been really tempted to pick up a set of these older JDM wheels. I love that some are narrower and just in general that they're more unique than the boring world of black Methods that are on every other Tacoma around here.

Any idea how light they are? I was talking to someone else about some vintage JDM wheel options and it sounds like many are quite light compared to lots of today's options.

I'll try to grab one for you! I don't have one right now. They do look quite skinny but the look is growing on me. Haha!

These wheels came in at 16lbs! Super light. I chose them to offset the weight of the new larger MT tires. My old setup with TRD OR wheels and the OEM nittos was 67lbs and it now comes in at a solid 71lbs. Even though the tires are 12 lbs heavier, these wheels managed to offset most of it.

One thing I will say is that if you want to run old wheels like these, you will most likely need a small spacer. In order to clear these wheels on the calipers i'd have to run at least 5-10mm spacer as the backside of the wheel face barely touches. I just decided to use 1.25" because I like 'em wide.

    Hi all,

I'm hitting 100K on my BFG 255s [totally unexpected] next week and I find out today that you can not currently purchase this tire. I'm not sure if its a KM3 phase-out or if its related to supply chain issues.

So, I'm feeling that this question is becoming more urgent with the impending winter weather. I didn't see the answer in this thread which took a bit of time to get through today. My direct question: is anyone running specifically 33X10.50r17 [not 255s, or 285s] on a 2nd gen with 17X7 wheels and 3" lift [I'm on toytec ultimate eibach springs and SPC UCAs]? I haven't gotten up to speed on 3rd gens yet and am getting the feeling this would work, but I am asking about 2nd gens please.

Also, I'm asking because I'm considering the 33" Kendas. also which I didn't see a result for [not 35s].

    Thank you,

    Aaron
