Winter tires

Another vote for Hakkipillitas. Hands down the best snow tire I've had, and I've had most of them. Incredibly good snow tire!

 

Just picked up a 21 Tacoma in May. Purchased my wheels and paired it with the Nitto Grappler. The sales guy told me they are good on snow. Anyone experienced with that?

 

No experience with Nitto personally but it definitely depends which Grapplers you have. Some models will be better than others or will have 3-Peak rating.

 

For an all-around tire that's fantastic in snow, I'd recommend the Yokohama Geolander AT G015. I had these on my last 4Runner and it was a beast in the snow.

For dedicated winter tires, +1 for Nokian Hakkapeliittas

 

I run Cooper Snow Claws on the Tacoma and they were great last year. My wife has General Grabber Arctics on her Rav4 and they are excellent. I also have Yokohama G075s on the winter beater and would recommend them as well.
I've tried Duratracs, KO2s and STMaxx in the winter over the years and yes, they work, but a dedicated winter is far superior if you spend any time in winter conditions.

 

I have to ask..have any of the folks saying their vehicles are beasts or unstoppable on All Terrains tried a proper winter tire at all?

 

Probably not….ATs are only “ok” in the snow, and rather terrible on ice. Seems like we see more black ice than snow where we are. At least down in the valley, mountains get dumped though.

ATs I have to be somewhat careful with, dedicated snow tires I can hammer.

 

For me, buying my first set of true winters was an eye opener. I have had several different AT's and for our winter months we get a freeze thaw cycle with occasional dumps of snow. The AT's had issues with traction in a lot of these situations, where the true snow drove more like an all season in summer, traction was easily found even on ice. Combine that with the Tacoma's traction control system and wheel spin is none existent. To me, a true winter is worth the money and time to change.

 

Hell of a lot safer too. Extra set of wheels makes it fairly easy and fast to swap out too. Takes me maybe 10 minutes, it’s longer to drag the tools out of the garage than it does to swap them! Since there are always Tacoma take off in the classifieds, can get them cheap. Found a set for $400 for my snow tires, sold the OEM tires that came on them for $200, pretty good deal to me.

It has been fairly mild this season so far, haven’t put them on yet.

 

I love true Snow Rated Tires and had 2 sets for my Sold Dodge Ram to buy my New 2022 Toyota TRD! Now on the hunt for a set of rims and Snow Tires for it when it gets here. Around here people that say there rig is un stoppable gets pulled out once in a while with my 4x4 JD Tractor. Even it get stuck now and then! My problem is the other guy with the wrong tires wondering why there truck does not stop good on ice! This a road blown in I am opening up, stopped for a picture it was about 4 ft deep.

 

I used wtbinc on Amazon which is the Amazon storefront of Tires By Web after my local shop said they were out of all Nokians when I had a damaged tire. I got them in less than a week with late 2021 date codes. I know fake tires is always a problem, especially with Amazon, but everything I could find on the company Tires by Web is that they've been around forever and list themselves as an authorized seller and having my old set of Nokians from the local tire shop to compare it was easy to draw the conclusion they were the real deals.

 

And do they live in the flats where you never have to stop/start on a incline, and negotiate tight turns on a incline while slowing or accelerating.

 

Purchased the Hakkapelitta R3 SUV's for this winter.
So far I'm quite pleased with them.

 

Snow Tires are Cheap Insurance to help get around in the winter. They are not good in the Summer as much as Summer rated Tires. No Tire does it all but for a $50K Car or Truck I will run the ones best for the time of the yea r and to protect my love ones and other with! $1480.00 for the 4 on my Challenger the Trucks should be cheaper I hope?? PS Guess which one works better to stop on ice?

I'm very happy with my studded Nokian LT3.

 

For those that don't know this Winter Snow Tires are made out of soft rubber compounds so they can flex and grab on ice. When there still on during the Summer they will wear out super fast getting hot. Now Regular Tires are Hard Rubber to hold up in the heat and hot roads so when cold there even harder and no flex to bite good. So they came up with a tire called All Season like the one on the left from my Challenger pretty good for high speeds cornering and stiff even run flat. But they are not the best traction tire for one or the other. My Winter Tires are not great for cornering at high speeds being soft but I am not doing 100 MPH in the winter! Both these tires are the same size just one is closer to the camera. For the TRD I will be looking for soft rubber but a deeper tread for soft snow or mud. My Challenger is not meant to go off road like the pickup but my TRD 4x4 is not meant to go 130 MPH on the highway too nor would I even want to in it. Studs I never run them they like to slid further on wet roads. Hard to win all the time!

Put a set of these on this year, 235/80/17. So far they have been great with the smaller amount of snow we have had so far this year. I’m also in the boat of looking to buy an additional set of rims over the winter to mount my ridge grapplers on in the spring. Question for those with 2 sets of dedicated rims/tires, are you running 2 sets of tpms sensors also? If so, what’s the easiest way I can code another set myself so I can do full tire swap myself and code new set to the truck?

I use Autel clone TMPS sensors and upload the OEM sensor Ids to the clone sensors. Easy, simple, fast. Swap wheels around with no programming the trucks PCM.

 

I think I’m going to play around with those next. Do you have the tool to do it or does a shop do it for you?

I just picked up the ATEQ Quickset X as my newest winter wheels came with OEM sensors so I can scan and download the sensors, but the cloneable ones are appealing.
