Thanks. We would be coming from the Pensacola area, cabins or campsites are cool as we have a 1 and 3 year old. It would be nice to exercise the 4 x 4 system in a legal off-road environment… too many lessons learned as a teenager for being in the wrong spot at the right time.

 

Good group of guys here. Nobody will pressure you into doing any trails you don’t feel comfortable on. Can always hop in with someone else and ride, too if you get sketched or want to see the best line.

 

I’ve only been to Hawk’s Pride but it seemed pretty family friendly, the people were nice. And the offroad is as mild or hard as you want. The trails are color coded, easy to know what you are about to get into

 

It has been a longggggggg time since I been wheeling, I am so ready. I use to go a couple times a month.

 

Doubt I can keep up with the Sami, but I’m down to ride.

NICE WARM-UP: Temperatures early this morning across Alabama are mostly in the 25-35 degree range… look for a nice warm-up today with a good supply of sunshine. Temperatures reach the low 60s in most areas this afternoon; the average high for Birmingham on November 24 is 62.

Clouds will increase across the state for Thanksgiving Day tomorrow ahead of a cold front. Showers will reach the northwest part of the state by afternoon… they should reach places like Tuscaloosa, Birmingham, and Gadsden around 3-4 p.m. Moisture will be limited, and rain amounts will be light; mostly 1/4″ or less. No risk of severe storms, probably no thunder. The high tomorrow will be in the 60-65 degree range.

FRIDAY AND THE WEEKEND: Friday will be sunny, breezy, and colder with a high in the low 50s. Temperatures will drop into the 25-32 degree range early Saturday morning with a clear sky and light wind. Then, over the weekend expect sunny days with a high Saturday in the upper 50s, followed by low 60s Sunday.

ON THIS DATE IN 1982: Hurricane Iwa, a Category 1 hurricane, impacted the Hawaii Islands of Ni’ihau, Kaua’i, and O’ahu with gusts exceeding 100 mph and a storm surge of 30 feet. The first significant hurricane to hit the Hawaiian Islands since statehood in 1959, Iwa severely damaged or destroyed 2,345 buildings, including 1,927 houses, leaving 500 people homeless. One person was killed from the high seas, and three deaths were indirectly related to the hurricane’s aftermath.

ON THIS DATE IN 2001: A total of 36 tornadoes touched down in Alabama, which at the time established a record for the number of tornadoes on a single day in the state (it would be surpassed ten years later by the 45 tornadoes we experienced on April 15, 2011).

The first major tornado of the day cut a 39-mile path from near Kennedy in Lamar County to just south of Carbon Hill in Walker County. Two people died in a mobile home near Kennedy. An F2 tornado cut a short path through the town of Haleyville in Winston County just before 11:30 a.m., injuring thirteen people. Just northeast of Birmingham, an F2 tornado moved along I-59 near Argo as it cut a nearly 14-mile path into St. Clair County.

The strongest tornado of the day touched down about 1:19 p.m. CST southeast of Oneonta in Blount County. The tornado produced three distinct areas of F4 damage. The other two fatalities of the day occurred near Sand Rock in Cherokee County just after 3 p.m. as an F2 tornado cut an 8-mile path. Again, the fatalities were in a mobile home.

COLD FRONT APPROACHING: Clouds will increase across Alabama on this Thanksgiving Day ahead of a cold front… showers will push into the northwest corner of the state by early afternoon. Those showers will work slowly southward late this afternoon and tonight; moisture is very limited and rain amounts should be 1/4″ or less for most places. Not expecting any thunder, and the rain will be over late tonight as drier air works into the state.

Tomorrow will be sunny but colder; the high will be close to 50, and areas north of Birmingham will hold in the 40s all day. Then, by early Saturday morning, another freeze is likely with temperatures in the 22-32 degree range.

Sunny weather continues over the weekend… look for highs in the 58-62 degree range Saturday and Sunday.

ON THIS DATE IN 1950: Called the “storm of the century” this storm impacted the eastern part of the US, killing hundreds and causing millions of dollars in damages. New York City recorded a 94 mph wind gust and Bear Mountain, just north of the city recorded a 140 mph gust. Record low temperatures were reported on the southern end of this storm in Tennessee and North Carolina. This storm was unique as Pittsburgh saw 30 inches of snow, while Buffalo saw 50 degrees with 50 mph wind gusts.

Here in Alabama, the temperature at Birmingham dropped to 5 degrees on November 25, 1950… our coldest November morning on record to this date. The low at Montgomery was 13, and Mobile dropped to 22.

COLDER: Following a cold front that passed through Alabama late last night, we will experience noticeably colder air today. Temperatures won’t get out of the 40s over the northern third of the state despite a sunny sky. A north wind of 8-16 mph will make it feel colder. The wind will die down tonight, and with a clear sky we expect temperatures to fall into the 22-32 degree range early tomorrow morning. Freezing temperatures are likely all the way down to I-10.

Tomorrow will be a sunny day with a high in the 57-60 degree range. Then, on Sunday, a disturbance will bring some clouds to South Alabama along with the chance of a sprinkle or two there, but for the rest of Alabama the sky will be partly sunny with a high not too far from 60 degrees.

ON THIS DATE IN 2007: Lightning and heavy rain delay the start of the Monday Night Football game at Pittsburgh’s Heinz Field between the Miami Dolphins and the Pittsburgh Steelers by 25 minutes. The muddy field conditions contribute to one of the lowest scoring NFL games won by the Steelers, 3-0. The teams combined 375 yards, and the winning field goal occurred with 17 seconds left in the game.
