First fire of the year. Probably the only day the rest of this month, actually. We are having some unusually pleasant fall weather in the desert.

I use very little pine. I was using these for kindle , which I get from a flooring company. Cut into pieces and hatchet split .

now I just find a piece of oak or maple that easily worked with a hatchet and use that instead. Better bed of coals to start my fire with

My 'free wood' wood shed is officially FULL. I can't believe they set these bundles out for free but who am I to argue with free 10'-12' kiln dried sticks. 20211018_142349.jpg 20211018_142309.jpg 20211018_142406.jpg

Love it when people post free firewood! I’ll take it! Two wood burning fireplaces in our house chews a lot of wood!

A little background: growing up, my parents never bought me any big ticket items. I paid for my own vehicle, gas, insurance, game systems, TV, etc. Flash forward to a couple weeks ago when my dad came over to help me with the semi load of firewood I had delivered. After just one day of using my old splitter, he calls me up and says he's going to buy me a new one whether I like it or not so I better pick one I like.

Nice splitter OP. You're going to love using it in vertical mode. That old splitter in the background is a beast of a thing. The new one should treat you well.

So my outset wood stove vents into my fireplace chimney past the flue and up about 1/4 way. My stove after long hours of use requires me to open the stove door to keep the fire from smothering itself. I don't have a full liner from the stove through the fireplace chimney to the chimney top. Is something bad happening maybe?

Are you new to heating with wood?
There's lots of good information on proper installation of wood stove chimneys.
The setup you described is inadequate and DANGEROUS.

It's a black stovepipe. I need to have it swept but i'll have to get a liner to be safe. I just run the CS log twice a season. I got quotes for liners and the cheapest install was $2100. Out of my budget so I'm very handy so I'll look up how to do it and get a liner myself. I found the install instructions and they do show the pipe is okay to install above the smoke shelf with no liner to the top.
