Exactly. EPA highway ratings are essentially fake. Nobody drives 55-60 anymore. You're either city driving or interstate driving these days. And at least for Montana, where I am, if you're doing 60 you are a road hazard. Limits here are 75-80.

EPA updated their testing procedure, it has 5 tests now. The avg is still about 50, but one test does take it up to 80 mph for part of it.

Although a small sample size, car and driver runs vehicle for 200miles at 75 mph to measure hwy mpg. It's a good comparison tool.

Loved it. These slow ass speed limits in the south suck balls.

Do u baby it? Idk if it's because my milage is rising or if it's the change in driving, but after I stopped babying it I get better milages. I used to do 65 all the way to work and would lightly accelerate. Now that I just accelerate normal / kinda fast, I get 18-19 mpg

Around town, I'll often get 20+mpg - and my area is hilly, and there are stop lights at every intersection (and the intersections are frequent).

I don't live in NYC though. I could realistically see around what you're getting in those driving conditions. NYC is kind of the extreme of non-highway or city driving. lol

The weather sucks ass five months out of the year so they need higher speeds to make up for the time spent lost indoors pumping farts into the sofa

In a lot of areas those high speeds just wouldn't work, though. Like here in SD or LA, there is just far too much traffic, and too many on/off ramps for a 75-80mph speed limit to work. I can't even imagine trying to merge onto the freeway here if the average flow of traffic was like 80+. lol

Same with any other city. Most of those higher speed limits are between cities. Like LA to Vegas or Phoenix.

From an aerodynamic perspective the math is pretty simple, twice the speed yields four times the drag. For example: the drag at 70mph is four times the drag at 35mph. It takes that much more horsepower (and fuel) to overcome the increase in drag. This aerodynamic principle applies to any vehicle, not just Tacomas, but the fuel consumption may change slightly for different engines and gearboxes.

We all like pictures, here is one explaining power available versus power required and one aspect of max airspeed of a particular aircraft. Note the difference of horsepower required between a speed of 60 and 120.

I do not see any difference with my truck between 55 all the way up to 80 MPH. I do, however, have a noticeable difference if I am going uphill vs downhill for more than a couple miles at a stretch.

Wow. Zero needs to get you on the team. I guess you have the secret to increasing their highway range?

Sorry to pull up this old thread, but I have 1200 miles on my stock '21 TRD OR MT6, and I am down to 15mpg, 13 miles each way to work doing 75-80mph. First week I was at 17, but it just keeps dropping. Seems like each week I lose 1mpg. I added 4lbs extra air to each tire, but I don't notice a difference. I bought my truck 500 miles away and drove it home 80-85mph. I managed 17mpg or so over the entire trip.

If I get some leisurely driving in (which I haven't in two weeks), mileage may improve, but the drive to work is aggressive and serious, and I guess I'm getting more comfortable with the truck. Shifting at or below 2k rpm as many have suggested in various threads just puts me in a dangerous position, since no one drives like that save for a rare senior citizen, but even they mostly know better not to get out in rush hours.

Is there something wrong with my truck? This member seems to think there would be if I can't get 18mpg at 80mph.

Anecdotal story: I live on one side of this aggressive stretch of road I drive to and from work every day. A car wash is almost directly on the opposite side of this road from where I live. I decided to get the truck washed one day just outside of rush hour. To pull out and get from one side to the other of the 4 lane highway crossing through the fast lane, without going too, too far to catch the turn arounds, I easily hit 3500 rpm or more. I don't pass 3000 rpm often going to work or back, but to get anything on the other side of the road without going far out of my way, is like race day. Ya, this stretch of road sucks. Lot's of accidents all year around. This road is a main road to access a good portion of my goings. If you're timid, you'll never get out. I've sat behind people for literally 15 minutes trying to pull out who aren't used to this road, because it can be scary, especially when its dark out.

Where are you located? If in a cold area... MPG will be worse until the temperatures go up in the spring. The hotter the ambient air - the better the MPG.
