    Serious questions:

Does your state require a hunter education or hunter safety course before you can purchase a hunting license??

Is there a minimum age to hunt in your state??

Ohio, has an "apprentice" hunting license for first timers - I think it is a 1 time deal, any age, no hunter's education class needed. Afterwards, I THINK you would need to pass the hunter's ed. class and buy a regular license (no minimum age as long as you pass the class).

Growing up in Pa. there was a 12 year old minimum age and an optional hunter's ed. class (I was 10 when I took it - I am 64 now - as my brother was 12 and my dad took it too). Not sure if there is a minimum age there now or not.

Both of my kids were 12 (mature enough in my mind to hunt/shoot an animal) when they took the Ohio hunter's ed. class and then hunted. I took it with each of them also.

The reason I ask is that it seems like a lot of kids at a very young age are hunting - single digit ages - and I was just curious how other states handle that.

KEEP THE PICS COMING!!!!! Gun opener in Ohio is Monday.

Here in N.C. you can hunt at any age, both my kids have their lifetime license. If you get them before their first birthday they are half price. They have to take the hunter education class before they turn 18, my son is 9. I feel he could pass it now but I'm going to wait a few years for him to take it since when he hunts, I am right beside him.

My daughter is 6 and got her first one a couple weeks ago, I didn't force her or ask her if she wanted to shoot one, that was all her decision.

I took the hunter ed class in high school, it was given through our agriculture class.

Lots of nice deer pictures this year.
This year deer hunting, gun and bow, has been real slow. In the mornings most of the deer I see are after 8:30
Last Saturday I passed up a shot on a wall hanger buck. He came out at last light following another buck that was following a doe and 2 little ones. He stepped into a patch of dogwoods. I had the cross hairs on him as he was facing away from. I said to myself, no sir I'm not doing it. Getting dark, still legal shooting time,, by 1 minute. He was blending in with the dogwoods and 4 other deer near buy. If I shot and he didn't go down I'd lose sight of him.
    He'll be back.
Besides I already have 2 deer on the living room wall, one gun one bow. Next one will be muzzleloader.

One year I made my mind up I was going to shoot one with every weapon, got one with the bow, muzzle loader, rifle, and a pistol. All I lacked was a shotgun, I hunted hard for one and the last day/evening of the season I had one come in at dark, couldn't make it out so I didn't shoot. I haven't tried to do that since and that was 18+ years ago.

We can shoot 6 deer, used to be 4 bucks and 2 does, now it's 2 bucks and 4 does and we can go get more doe tags.

Until the mid 1990's we only had 2 days of the season we could shoot does, I guess that paid off for us.

I used to teach the NC Hunters Education course when I lived there. I had students as young as ten but recommended to most parents to either have the child wait until they were at least 12 to take it or to take it again after they are 12. I found that most kids got more out of it when they were a bit older and more focused. The great thing is that all states take each others course. So a card from NC is good anywhere in the country and all the provinces of Canada. I teach in GA now and get a lot of older hunters who are exempt by GA law but want to go hunt Elk out west in states that require the card no matter the age. On another note, I got my lifetime license while in NC so if you need help harvesting stuff up there let me know. lol

I can shoot 1 buck, 1 doe with bow and one of each with gun. Extra doe tags are available in some areas. I'm happy with one deer. Just the wife and I. Our muzzle loader season starts after regular gun ends. A few years I had to wait until muzzle loader season to get a deer.

Thanks for the info I asked about guys who replied!!! Waiting on more other state's info.

Number of deer (antlered and antlerless) is nice to know, too.

In Ohio and Pa. (last I bought a license there in 2020) you almost need to be a lawyer to understand the regs -especially for deer - anymore. Harvest numbers vary by 'unit' and some units are county lines (Ohio), not major roads (Pa)!!! Talked to buddies at camp in Pa in October, this is what I WAS TOLD was legal that weekend - archery for buck/doe (with antlerless tag), muzzleloader for doe (with muzzleloader tag), black bear with muzzleloader or bow (with bear tag), Seniors and Junior hunters (under 16 years) could also shoot a buck with a muzzleloader - I THINK, same for current military members??? So, if it doesn't have florescent/hunter orange on SHOOT IT!!!! Some of these regs depend on which management unit you are hunting in, too - not statewide, I THINK.

So many concurrent seasons gives me a headache trying to figure them out - used to be one animal (deer or bear) using one method (bow, gun, muzzleloader) so it was easy to know what you could shoot, when, and with what weapon.

    Sorry, for the long-winded post.

Had one broadside at 100 yards right at daylight... A miss it seems. I double checked the scopes today, and then she shot my wife's and my .243... I am beginning to think she has a bad case of buck fever... I mean hitting 10's at 25 yards should equal dead deer out to 200 pretty easy, which is quite a bit farther than she has had to shoot so far. (Hers are the untapped btw)
