Non center cutting and center cutting end mills.
Unless I'm hole drilling or tapping, I keep the quill up or not down more than a few inches when milling, it's all about rigidity. And the knee is more accurate with it's graduation more so than the rule on spindle.

The last half dozen pages or so are why I started following this thread... I've spent nearly 20 years as a volunteer firefighter and that always came before anything. Now, As I fond myself thinking about retirement from the fire service, I find myself in my garage with my woodworking tools, but also just picked up a mini benchtop metal lathe and have a benchtop mill in mind. I feel like I might learn a thing or three from you folks!

My dad was a professional firefighter and also a volunteer fireman, my brother and I followed him in the volunteer FD for a long time, I hung it up about 20 years ago, I got tired of being fussed at by the chief about not making calls, I worked too much and didn't make time to run them, usually the ones in the middle of the night.

As far as machining, if you have any questions don't hesitate to ask, someone will be more than happy to offer assistance

Here's a couple of adjustment points on a Bridgeport Mill. Adjustments will remove someone the slop. 20211124_111112.jpg 20211124_111150.jpg 20211124_111325.jpg

Remains to be seen I bought the tires and wheels the rest came along
Many times over the years I have had to pad the shaft ( build up by welding )then it was machined down to the correct size.

This was if it was deemed a faster repair then sourcing a virgin piece of steel and making it from scratch

Most often something the purchasing Agent thought no reason to keep on the shelf.

I was lucky I fell into something I enjoyed doing pretty early for a few years it was about the money so I went after the higher paying jobs 72 hour weeks.

Then it kinda went to the most challenging jobs I did find I got bored very easy. and as long as the bills got paid and some toys could be bought all was well.

And the last point of adjustment on the knee. They need to be tighten down a little at a time and run through the range sometimes. Otherwise they'll be to tight to move in one spot.20211124_113739.jpg

This mill has .130" slop in the x axis. Not good at all! I've replaced the nut before but now I'm thinking there is a way to get more adjustment by taking it back apart and splitting the nut, then put a screw in it to drive the two halves apart. Uncharted territory for me....but I'm not scared. A different day though.
